COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pure Milwaukee Genius Series 4: Black IPA - We took all the stuff people love about IPA’s and gave this beer plenty of crystal and dark roasted malts. This dark coffee-colored beer pours a rocky, light tan head that leaves plenty of lacing on the glass. the hoppy pine and floral aromas ready your palate for an immediate bitterness. Instead, the sweet, caramely crystal malts blitz through, followed immediately by a sharp piney flavor from the Zeus and Cascade hops. The smooth body leaves a long lasting hoppy finish.

Bottle. Poured an opaque dark brown color. The head was thick, creamy, and light brown. Smelled of dark chocolate and fresh green hops. A whiff of leather emerged after some time in the glass. Medium bodied and delicately sweet with mild to moderate bitterness. Chocolate, caramel, pine, and citrus flavors accented by light roasty bitterness. Nice.

Lakefront 88 Sampler Pack - $19.99 at Olde Crabapple Bottle Shoppe in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown, near black body, ruby-hinted at the edges when held to the light and capped with a tall, frothy, beige head.

Smell: Florals and a cutting pine note arrive ahead of the roasted malts smelling of chocolate bars and coffee.

Taste: Small snippet of sweetness for the tastes of coffee and chocolate, though the initial malt flavors aren’t particularly bold here, like watery coffee and stale, forgotten cocoa. Low chalkiness. Pine needles and fresh, sliced oranges with a robust bitterness. Some modest grapefruit juice additions. Low acidic qualities. Modestly malt, faintly bitter, but thinning out on the finish (thinnish?).

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-light carbonation. Feels somewhat hollow passing over the tongue.

Overall: For me, it seemed a bit muted, a bit muffled, and just held back from its potential, in terms of malts, the hop flavor, and even the body.

Pours dark with a thin tan head. Hoppy and dry with a hint of roasted malt and a bit of pashion fruit in the bitter finish. Not quite the lakefront IPA but still not bad.

22 oz bomber from Spirits Red Bank. Poured a root beer body under a huge pillowy foamy light beige head, not much lace despite what the description boasts. Aroma is chocolate and citrus or to be a bit more specific Tootsie Rolls and oranges along with a touch of dusty kitchen cabinet. The body is thin and watery and the carbonation is stingy. Flavor of lightly burnt toast, citrus rind and some weak wet chocolate. Not a very good black IPA which is one of my favorite styles.

650 ml. bottle. Served at cellar temperature. Pours a thick, lasting, light beige head, with attractive lacing, over a clear, dark brown (SRM 35) body.....nose is light pine, citrus, with light chocolate....taste is light caramel/toffee, then big pine, lighter citrus, finishing with a medium lingering bitterness with a hint of caramel sweetness....mouth feel is medium, carbonation high. This is a typical of this emerging style, which is deservedly popular. BJCP 7/3/13/4/7
