COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pure Milwaukee Genius Series 4: Black IPA - We took all the stuff people love about IPA’s and gave this beer plenty of crystal and dark roasted malts. This dark coffee-colored beer pours a rocky, light tan head that leaves plenty of lacing on the glass. the hoppy pine and floral aromas ready your palate for an immediate bitterness. Instead, the sweet, caramely crystal malts blitz through, followed immediately by a sharp piney flavor from the Zeus and Cascade hops. The smooth body leaves a long lasting hoppy finish.

Slightly resinous hops in aroma and taste, the dark malts don’t make much of an impact on taste, except mostly in the color but a little in the background with a slight smoky flavor. Good, although not exceptional.

On tap at Old Fashioned in Madison, pours pitch black with a nice tan head, aroma is nice and hoppy and the flavor is a decent mix of hops and malt with a touch of earth in it, some what of a dry finish, not terrible by any means.

Dark pour, decent head.

Very smooth, easy-drinking India black with no flaws anywhere. Certainly not an aggressive west coast India black, not dank, but also not ashy or overloaded with Cascade, just very easy drinking, goes down like 5%, tasty mellow IBA.

Bottle. Dark brown pour, plently of carbonation and a great strong hoppy IPA aroma. Flavor starts off with creamy roasted malts, a little chocolate and finishes with a nice pine hop bite. I’m still on the fence about most black IPA’s, but this is solid(especially for the price.)

Bomber poured a clear dark brown with a lasting tan head and good lacing. Aromas of roasted malt, skunk bud, earthiness, coffee, citrus and ligt pine. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a lightly dry finish. Flavors of roasted malt, coffee, pink grapefruit, light orange zest and light cocoa with a smooth dry moderatly bitter roasty finish.

Roasty nutty darker malts on the nose as well as leafy earthy hops. Nice aroma. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. The flavor is more roasted darker malts, nutty notes, floral, leafy, and earthy hops - Cascade - there it is. Nice dry finish. Good drinkability. Nice stuff.

Very dark brown, tan head. Nice hoppy, grassy aroma. Flavor is quite nutty with a dry bitter finish. Interesting beer.

Bottle to snifter. Brown black pour with a ruby hue when near light. Big off white frothy head that leaves a noticable lacing. Aroma is nice and piny with some orange and malt. Taste is malty pine and citrus spice in the end. Palate is medium soft carbonation and creamy with a chaulky finish. Pretty tasty, I think a touch more hops and we could have something great.

22 oz bomber from Steve’s Mineral Point (Madison, WI). Pours a dark blackish ruby pour, reddish edges and bottom, good haze, with a cakey light brown head atop, laces ok. Aromas throw a blast of piney and floral hops, grass and some citrusy grapefruit, dry roasty malts mix with some light sweetness, but very dry, roasty, hoppy. Initial is medium bodied throwing some healthy piney resinous hops, florals, and grapefruit rind. Roasty malts, dry bitterness, some caramel and toasty bread. Black malts, a hint of coffee, but largely hop dominated, with a bit lighter bodied, the hops really take over, healthy pine and florals, grapefruit, with some toffee, toast, and roasty black malts in decent supply. While I enjoy the beer, it is largely a display of hops, the malt doesn’t shine through, getting humped into submission by a big hop bouquet, piney and floral with an ok citrus quality. Malt profile is forgettable, with some light touches of roast, toast, and some light sweetness, a bit creamy and silky on the palate, tasty, but probably not an amazingly constructed beer for the style. It’s ok.. Solid.. Well hopped. I can see people who really enjoy a big blast up front digging this.

india-style black ale? MORE LIKE INDIA-STYLE BROWN ALE. so it has that cheese rind and mold smell like so many others. chewy caramel malt with light roast, that too. thin, dissolving finish with metallic twangy yeast and dried egg shell flavor in the bitter finish. some dishsoap character as well. ah fuck.
