COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pure Milwaukee Genius Series 4: Black IPA - We took all the stuff people love about IPA’s and gave this beer plenty of crystal and dark roasted malts. This dark coffee-colored beer pours a rocky, light tan head that leaves plenty of lacing on the glass. the hoppy pine and floral aromas ready your palate for an immediate bitterness. Instead, the sweet, caramely crystal malts blitz through, followed immediately by a sharp piney flavor from the Zeus and Cascade hops. The smooth body leaves a long lasting hoppy finish.

In short: A piney scented/perfumy black ipa low on malts. Weak example of the style.
How: Bottle 22oz, consumed a few months after purchase.
The look: Black body topped by a large dark-beige head with medium retention.
In long: The aromatic hoppy nose is scented pine and a bit flowery with an overall perfumy sensation. Taste is low in the malt department, sparse roasted cereals, light yeasty sensation, green pine needles, rose water, burnt toasts crumbs, distant coffee beans, plain yoghurt, spicy edge in the hopping. The lowly malted and yeasty body is elusive which is particularly disappointing in this style of beer. Mild bitterness of short duration. Light perfume sensation in the after-taste. Not bad but rather weak for the style. I didn’t like the beer much but I drank the whole bomber anyway because my parents raised me well, “Finish you beer, there are sober kids in Africa” they always said.

Pours black with a bulging tan head on a slow pour. Aromas of citrusy fruits and a little bit of a floral scent. Not nearly as bitter as the nose would suggest, as well as a slight bit of maltiness that the nose left out as well. Really balanced taste that I thoroughly enjoy. Really light body, I’m guzzling without trying to. A short lived bitter after taste as well. A fine, but not great beer.

A remarkable black IPA for the price. I scored a bomber bottle of this for 3.99, which is tough to beat considering what’s inside. The pour itself and the label aren’t so easy on the eyes, but don’t judge a beer by it’s label. Delicious, full bodied, a light tan head and loads of lace on the glass. Lovely malt and hop balanced delicately with one another.

Very smooth and tasty Black Ale. Barely leaves an after taste. Excellent beer! More words cause I need 85 characters for some reason.

The commercial description has it perfect. Very enjoyable beer. I would definitely buy this one again and can’t wait to try the other lakefront brewery beers.

Poured from a large bottle purchased in Chicago into a tall pint glass. The beer had a thick dark color with a slight dark-brown hue and a big foamy-creamy dark tan head with good retention, and great cling and lacing. Its aroma featured a blend of earthy, floral, and pine hops, along with a mix of caramel malt, sugar, and light yeast. The taste was fairly grainy and bitter, but also had a toasty sweet caramel malt effect, and light notes of fruit. It was a fairly wet beer and was a touch creamy, with a smooth, filling mouthfeel, and average carbonation and fizz.

UPDATED: MAR 10, 2014 near black color with ruby-orange highlights; clear; Very smooth, medium body. Durable tan foam leaves exceptional lacing. Result is exactly as planned: a well-crafted IPA with a well-proportioned addition of dark roasted malts. Plenty of hoppiness remains, especially in the aroma.

22oz. bottle. Aroma of roasty, doughy, lightly sweet malts, citric, floral hop and faint notes of black bread and pine. Mostly opaque brown-black color with a lasting, fine, uneven head and plenty of lacing. Flavor profile is comprised of dark, roasty, gently sweet malt, piney, spicy, lightly floral hops and a moderate amount of bitterness and coffee character that appears at the finish, and drying out considerably.. Light but insistent carbonation and lightly resinous on the palate, body is medium. Very drinkable rendition.
