Pure Milwaukee Genius Series 4: Black IPA - We took all the stuff people love about IPA’s and gave this beer plenty of crystal and dark roasted malts. This dark coffee-colored beer pours a rocky, light tan head that leaves plenty of lacing on the glass. the hoppy pine and floral aromas ready your palate for an immediate bitterness. Instead, the sweet, caramely crystal malts blitz through, followed immediately by a sharp piney flavor from the Zeus and Cascade hops. The smooth body leaves a long lasting hoppy finish.

Pours a thick black with thin off white head. Aroma is hoppy. Was the best IBA in the dairy state.... until New Glarus Black Top entered the ring.

Bomber from Friar Tuck-Springfield. Pours hazy dark brown with some sediment and light tan head. Aromas of a shit load of sweet malt, caramel, some pine, and light citrus. Flavors of some roast, coffee, cocoa, and some hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is a little thin. Really don’t care for the aroma, but I do like the flavor. Kind of a weird flavor for a black IPA with the coffee notes but it works for my palate. Poor example of the style in my opinion, but has some decent qualities.

Bottle. Strong pine and mild caramel malt aroma. Dark black-brown color with large tan head. Slightly sweet caramel malt and rather subdued pine hops bitter flavor. Like this one - hops don’t come out as much in the flavor as the aroma.

Bomber served in a tulip. Pours dark brown with amber hues and a really nice frothy head. Good lacing. Piney aroma with some sweetness and some roast. The palate is similar except the hops are more subdued. Medium body, decent carbonation, thinnish texture, and a balanced dry finish of roast and earthy hops. Almost like a hoppy porter.

22oz bottle-pours mahogany with a tight tan head and heavy lacing. Aroma is roasty, then lots of resin/pine. Taste is roasty/cocoa-medium malt, 2nd pine hops. Soft carbonation.

Got a pint of this at Palomino’s with my Lakefront Brewery tour gift certificate. Thick black color, some light tan head. Looked like a porter, tasted like an IPA, just like a black IPA should. It was definitely heavier than I was expecting, and after drinking several other beers on the brewery tour it was a bit of a struggle. But in and of itself, a great brew that I’d like to try in a different context.

Black pour with a chunky tan head and spotty lacing down the sides of the glass. Aroma is minor hop bitterness, light pine, and light, slightly astringent roast. Taste is weak hop bitterness, no pine, and a soft malt backbone with slight roast. Watery mouthfeel. I did not like this beer.

22oz bottle. Dark brown pour with an averaged sized tan head. Chocolate, lighter roast, pine, some earth, and some citrus. Sweeter with a lighter bitter finish.

12/23/11. 22oz bottle thanks to PorterPounder’s first ever "official" trade. I popped him easy and gentle. Dark brown pour with a loose, soapy tan head that fades to a film fast but laces a lot in thick, creamy sheets. Big hoppy aroma with citrus, pine, and a bit of dank dust underlying chocolate and the teensiest bit of roast. Surprisingly light flavor that shows leafy citrus hops, a bit of pine, more hops, and a bit of chocolate. The taste is nice, but a bit light and thin.
