4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 manuchampions (1163) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUN 19, 2010
12 oz bottle from Brewery Creek. Aroma is a mix of treacle like malts with pungent hops. Pours a murky off gold with sticky head that reduces to ever present lacing. Taste is slightly citric with oily hop notes and decent bite. Nice bready malt under-notes. Finish is sharp but lingering. A good mouth swirl leaves raisin, leather notes that stick to the palette on the finish. Very well crafted IPA.

Served with a very nice, large, foamy and frothy, off-white head and good lace. Color is a hazy medium amber. Aroma is a little malty and lots of fresh hops. Flavor is firstly - fresh, chewy hops on top of a little caramel malt. Good beer. Not too sweet; just enough to stand up to the hops. Great carbonation and mouth. Nice finish too. Don’t notice the alcohol until the very end of the finish. Perhaps a session beer. I like this one a lot!

According to the menu at the Comet Cafe, Lakefront brews this beer expressly for the Comet Cafe (it is also not on Lakefront’s website). This is also (to my knowledge) the only IPA Lakefront makes.
Appearance was a hazy light-colored orange. There was good head formation which was retained while I drank it forming decent lacing.
Aroma was very citrusy and pleasant.
Flavor was of hop bitterness along with a citrus notes. As it warmed up slightly the citrus notes tasted to me more lemon-y, to the extent that it sort of made my mouth pucker.
Mouthfeel was not overly sticky (like many aggressively hopped American IPAs) nor was it watery.
This beer smelled, tasted, and felt very good. If this restaurant placement is a test for Lakefront, I’d encourage them to move forward with this beer.

Bottle. Nice, huge tropical aroma, grapefruit and lychee with miscellaneous citrus, lesser pineapple, and just a hint of pine tucked far in the background. Superb pale malt backing. Slightly hazy orange pour with a dense, rocky, lovely beige head. Copious amount of fine particle resting in perfectly stable suspension. Taste is soapy with apparently real pink grapefruit tones, rather bitter but not to excess, lovely (again, authentic!) fruit notes with just a little bit of resin. Late onrushing caramel is gorgeous. Full body, perhaps a bit too full for a casual-drinking IPA, with pleasantly refreshing crispness. Aftertaste dry and fruity, not rubber-gloves-and-cotton dry, but with a nudge in that direction. A big winner from Lakefront – one of the better Midwest IPAs!

Enjoyed on tap at the quality control station halfway through the brewery tour. A perfect break from Lakefront’s typically uber-intense malty beverages. Aroma is sensational citrus and pine--the equivalent of alcoholic smelling salts. Sharply bitter taste, but absolutely in a good way, balanced by, what else for Lakefront, a malty body.

Apricot pour with a fluffy white head that goes away quickly but leaves ample lacing...very nice looking. Aroma is a nice balance...good level of tropical citrus hops, some piney hops, lots of grapefruit, but some malt to back it all up while not being overwhelming in any aspect. Flavor is nicely balanced as well...loads of citrus (again, tons of light grapefruit) flavor, some pine notes, burnt caramel malts. Interestingly enough, the malt seems to really mix in near the end of the drink, keeping it from ending overly bitter like (at least how I feel as a non-hophead) most other IPAs. Pretty high level of carbonation, but the body on this thing is pretty heavy...very IIPA like! I gotta say, this was a very impressive IPA...one of the best I’ve had from the midwest save Bell’s Two Hearted! Great effort Lakefront!

Aroma was outstanding. Apricot, peach, and fruit with a touch of pine. I liked this bottle before I tasted it. Appearance was a hazy dark gold with a tall, thick, lasting head. For taste, it’s not the strongest or the most bitter or the hopiest, but it seems to have a real balance that sticks with you from the general thickness. For the style, I would describe this as thick and I think that’s a good thing. Alcohol taste is virtually nonexistent. Overall, very glad I tried it and hope to try it again.

Bottle. Pours a thick, hazy burnt orange color. Wonderful aroma dominated by pineapple and citrus hops along with some more grassy notes. Taste is nice and bitter; very earthy. Some faint traces of brown sugar.

Strong grapefruit aroma, with the flavor busting on the palate at first then backing off for a dry hoppy taste. For some reason the taps taste far superior to the bottle, more so than normal. If on tap, I’ll usually go to this guy for a nice evening out.
