Commercial Description:
An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses. New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

Body-medium honey, almost flat looking-just a thin ring of bubbles around the glass. Nose-apple juice, grape, very fruity. Taste-apple, plastic, cidery, light band-aid. Reminds me of some of the wildly fermented French ciders that I have enjoyed (just in the elastic quality). Tastes more like apple cider than a beer.

Bottle. Orange, honey and white pepper aroma. Bright yellow with a nice big head. Lemon-orange malt with moderate carbonation. Light fruity beer - wish it had more sorghum flavor personally, however sorghum isn’t exactly a flavor most people like.

12 oz. bottle. Aroma was of sour candy. Gold body with not much of a head somewhat flat. Flavor was like a sweet candy cough syrup but not as bad as it lokks as I write this. Finish was like drinking apple juice.

Average pilsner looking beer, pale golden, large pure white head. Weird sour aroma, like sour cooking apples and cider vinegar, slightly phenolic. Strange taste too, again i get the cider vinegar flavour,a lemony bite in the end, and some strange wild Belgian sourness, Kinda thin on the palte, and fizzy but its not too bad in this heat. Overall quite a strange beer indeed. I didnt think it was that bad in fact.

Pours clear yellow with medium off-white head. Nose is cane sugar, honey, rice. Flavor of rice and banana esters, and cooked vegetables. Cloying, syrupy mouthfeel. Not bad but thank god I don’t have celiac sprue.

This is a beer? Smelled like vinegar, sake, and adjuncts. No head, copper and straw yellow in color. Not so bad. Just not my bag, but it gets points for originality. At least it didn’t lie about putting rice in its beer like Budweiser et al.

Lakefront New Grist Sorghum Beer 12 oz bottle Moderate pour in a mug. Brewed 2nd week February 07, gristled 05/07. Poured a clear yellow with an average white fizzy head. Smelt of moderate crisp apples and vinegar. Taste was upfront strong sour apple cider and acetic white wine vinegar with a light breadiness followed by a moderate sourness and a light but distinct weird grain taste on a short finish. Palate was light bodied, watery, fizzy and moderately mouth puckering. Overall, a very odd beer. The grain taste on the finish is very interesting and attracts curiosity, but it’s so sour, like a Belgian wild ale. Is this normal? It’s very different and I can see myself growing to like it, but not at that price (10.99/6pk). Just weird. Fun to try once in a great while, just for the extremely odd experience.

color is a lemony gold with a THIN white head.has a strong smell that’s hard to place. kinda yeasty? almost has a faint belgian ale aroma, maybe its estery. taste is crisp and bright easy drinking with light hops on the end. funky sorghum flavor is present as well as some white rice. not bad for a sorghum beer.
