Commercial Description:
An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses. New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

Nice golden color, small to no head or atleast it was gone before i noticed it’s size.Funky sort of aroma with a sweet side some appleish thing going on as well as a bit of an aroma i can’t quite identify.Very different flavor, not exactly bad though. The flavor is sort of bitter throughout the tasting, with a bit of a bite in the end and a slight bitter aftertaste that sort of lingers a bit.I might have to rerate this one after a few more but for now all i can say is different, very different and i still have 5 more of these so i hope it grows on me.......second bottle and theres little change in my opinion,it’s still a very strange brew, but i have to give a few points for the effort. It couldn’t have been all that easy to use these ingredients and come up with a brew that some what tastes like beer.I might be a bit crazy but as this brew warms up a bit i seem to get an almost ciderish after taste.Hmmmm.

Crystal blond with light head. Breezy, spicy nose of rice and perhaps sorghum. A light farmhouse pepperiness. Flavor is similarly of an intriguing spiciness, with similarities to grain yet different enough to keep one guessing. Nice farmhouse peppery finish. Earthy and prickly. Crisp, quenching and flavorful. Reminiscent of a farmouse ale using a subdued yeast.

I would pick this one over the redbridge any day. while its not the best tasting, i wouldn’t consider utterly repuslive, ecspecially if it’s all you’re able to drink. However, this is can be a nasty beer after its been sitting in the bottle for a few months. The rice goes horribly stinky and it is undrinkable. Poured a somewhat hazey golden-orange colour with a full white head. Strong rice aroma, and faint wheat. Mouthfeel is wierd, sort of slimey, with a dull, chewy finish.

12 oz. bottle. Pours yellow with fast white head. The aroma is lemon peel, green apples, and flour. The flavor is apples, aspirin, coarse flour. Weird finish and aftertaste. This is no good.

Extremely clear and nearly white in color with a small splash of ammonia to tint it yellow. Honey whole wheat bread with oats on the crust is the first waft to register, followed by sugary lemons, low fat crescent rolls, nectar and sweet clover. Peculiar flavor, immediately imparting a watered down characteristic, but it spins into something that gets me thinking about lemon-flavored Propel fitness water. Palate’s remotely pathetic with an odd effervescent sprits, aligning the flavor to something now more akin to lemon seltzer water. Honey biscuit dough finish. Although the rating says 2.7, it’s not that bad - it’s just that the sum is worse than the parts. Hopefully the gluten-free group will be more pumped about this one.

When I read ’made from rice extract’ on the bottle, I had to buy this. Not even Budweiser has those kind of balls. At least this one is from Milwaukee, a place known for great beers. Oh, and there’s a sun on the bottle, and sunlight is awesome for beer. Finally, the bottle says it’s crisp. How could I not buy this? My expectations were low, I expected a lackluster pale lager. I uncapped it, and first put my nose to the bottle for a preview. Nothing. It coulda been Dasani. I poured it and got an extremely pale yellow body with a dishwater head that rapidly diminished. My father laughed as he saw this. Crystal clear, no lacing. I checked the aroma again. Well, it smells like something, but I wouldn’t call it beer. I got some vague fruity notes with some cardboard. Really empty, and what is there is not good. The flavor lingers a little longer than I’d like on my tongue. Again this flat fruit flavor with something that just doesn’t belong. Interestingly, it’s more likely that something should belong that isn’t. Well, at least I didn’t have to change the numbers up above.

an interesting(that’s right Tad, i said interesting" concoction. a bright golden yellow that is very clear with a small white head. sake comparisons start in the nose, it has that fruity ester nose that i used to get from drinking a lot of warm sake at my last job. a bit of floral, like those white flowers that i can never remember the name of, but a girl i used to know loved. sweet apple cider like flavor with the finish of a sake without the alcohol bite. i did not go into this thinking, oh a rice beer, i bet it is like sake, that uis just what has hit me. the apple flavor is more pronounced than anything here. very thin, overly sweet and onesided for me, but far from a drain pour even though i won’t repurchase this, i can see why it was brewed and don’t feel bad about grabbing a 6 pack.
