Commercial Description:
An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses. New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

Bottle. Brewed during the third week of June. Pours a clear light-gold with a thin white head. A very subtle, citrusy and doughy aroma. Oh wow! This just doesn’t taste right. Tastes like seltzer water with some salt thrown in. Some weird wild rice graininess too. Definite vegetable tastes at the end. Thin-bodied. Not exactly BMC swill-beer awful, just strangely intriguing... I don’t think I’d turn down another.

Pours extremely pale, light yellow with a white head that quickly disappears (looks more like ginger ale than beer). Aroma smells like bread dough and yeast with hints of acid. The flavor and finish is strangely dry, not very malty and virtually no hops. I have a friend who is Celiac who gave a bottle to me. I think this beer is for Celiac’s who are used to drinking bland and uninteresting beers (i.e. industrial macro-brew lagers). A Celiac who was a beer afficianado before embarking upon their gluten-free regiment would be sorely disappointed. I have had other gluten-free beers that were much better (though they weren’t made from sorghum and rice as was this beer).

(bottle). Clear, light gold color. Medium white head. Light grainy aroma and flavor. Short duration. Dry finish. Thin texture. Soft carbonation.

Slight malt aroma. Very pale yellow, just a couple of bits of foam that disappeared quickly. Pretty bland flavors with a hint of hops in it and a slightly citric aftertaste. If I was unable to have gluten, this would at least provide some of the concept of beer, so I can’t really pan it, but it isn’t something I’ll look for. I applaud the initiative.

Citrusy and funny tasting. Not terrible. A 9 rating seems a bit low. Different but that’s to be expected. Weird aftertaste. Best when it was really cold.

12oz bottle from the LCBO. An interesting new product though I baffled by its inclusion to the LCBO line up given the staggering number of very interesting beers from this same brewery that I would love to try. Wtf? Anyways, pours a sparkling gold, very effervescent with a fast dissipating white head. The aroma is weird, but nice. Kind of spicy, in a Belgian sort of way, sweet ’malts’ but obviously not barley malts of course, ’sorghum’. It actually smells pretty nice. Some minor fruity esters and candi sugar? Flavour is even better, some dry spicyness up front makes way for a lot of malty sweetness and mixed fruity elements. Nice and crisp feel to it. I never thought a gluten-free beer could actually be so tasty! I could easily drink this again, though I’d still like it if the LCBO could bring in some other things from this brewer. (Focktoberfest? Titanic Pilsener? Come on! I want them!) Definitely an under-rated beer IMHO. I think I’m the only other person besides Len who has rated this new product in the entire province of Ontario. Damn, we’ll just try anything won’t we?

The color was light golden. The head was thin, fizzy, and white. The aroma was powder, fingernail polish remover, and corn. The flavor was corn. The palate was carbonated and heavy. The finish was abrupt.
