Commercial Description:
An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses. New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

Utterly disgusting. Poured a flat pale color with some amber to it. Head was pretty flat and the lacing nil. The aroma was wheaty-like with some bubblegum and lots of citrus. The flavor was awful, all that typical Lakefront sourness mixed in with wheat flavor and some flat out detergent like children’s blowing bubbles flavors. Mouthfeel was light but acidic, nasty. An offensive beer that I couldn’t finish.

For some reason I’ve always wanted to try this brew ever since it came out. Thanks to a bonus bottle sent by awaller05, I finally got my chance. Thanks Andy! -- Lakefront New Grist Beer "Made from Sorghum and Rice Extract" pours a clear light gold color and has a bubbly white head. There is a moderate amout of visible carbonation. The aroma and flavor a unique and difficult to pin down since I haven’t had much sorghum before. The aroma reminds me a little of butterscotch or toffee. The flavor is like a generic white wine with some light apple cider qualities. There is a little bit of a sourness toward the finish. This beer is light bodied and fairly smooth. Overall it is different and somewhat refreshing. I’m glad that I finally tried this brew, but will probably not revisit it again. 12 oz bottle (MAR WK1 2006) from awaller05.

Glad there is something out there for the Celiacs. Medium gold, little head, a bit fizzy. Odd aroma, sort of like bread and lemon lime soda. Flavor is similar, with a bit of apples and wax present as well. Not horrible, but not spectacular either. In any case, kudos to Lakefront for brewing what may be the ultimate niche beer.

12 ounce bottle purchased at Manchester Wine and Liquors. Aroma is doughy, a bit sweet with some honey notes. I also detect some floral notes present as well. Relatively faint, though. Transparent pale pale yellow color with a small, quickly dissipating white head. Flavor is very fizzy, lightly sweet. Some doughy flavors are present in the middle. Pimento olive flavors present in the finish. Lots of olives, yup. Some mild acidity. Not really a fan of this. I’m so lucky I don’t have Celiac disease (although I’d be skinny and not fat if I did have it :- )

Bottle. Sweet grainy aroma - that is unmistakably sorghum, very strong and intimidating, with some reminders of Thanksgiving table scents. Sickly pale golden body with a scant white head. Terrible, terrible taste - it’s a bit difficult to describe - stale, grainy, and gamey, with all the worst headache-inducing off-flavors of a bumwine minus any of the good childish fruity flavors. Medium body feels sludgy, with subtle alcohol. Unbelievably NASTY.

Pale orange body, thin to almost absent off-white head. Fleeting aroma with grain husks and a strange sour character. The same sourness is the defining characteristic of the lifeless body, which reminds me of significantly watered-down apple juice with a peculiar aftertaste that only becomes apparent after swallowing the "beer." I applaud the brewery for developing a beer possibly safe for Celiacs, but this about as good as gluten-free rice- or tapioca-based bread. Which means not very.

Aroma is decidedly apple-like with some faint citrus notes. It even looks like an apple cider with a lazy, thin white head and a pale golden color that is transparent and allows a good look at the bubbles steadily rising up from within the beer. Very light and watery fore is citrus accented with the aforementioned apple making an appearance through the middle. Has a sugar substitute tasting flavor in the finish. Very watery. I guess if I was a Cleiac sufferer I’d be happy for it, but I’m not and this doesn’t make me happy.
