Murphy (1759), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Jan 12, 2006 Pours clear copper, filmy soapy head dies off to nothing. Aroma is funky, sour, pulpy and floury. Gross. Taste is appalingly sour. Mixture of metallic and alcoholic flavors dominate. Too carbonated. Medium sweetness throws the beer out of balance even more. Drain pour for sure.
sizeoneshoe (1), Ontario, Canada does not count Jul 3, 2009 Rating-As-I-drink:
Appearance: Pale yellow, good clarity, rapidly diminishing head.
Aroma: My first thought was bananas gone bad. Somewhat fruity, with a metallic edge. Very Minimal.
Flavor: Mildly "malty", insofar as it can be without any barley present. A rather "meh", sour/sweet/metallic background note. Not overly distinct, but there’s some reasonable bitterness to the finish. But there’s that darn metallic edge, again...
Mouthfeel: A bit above thin.
This gets a slightly higher rating than average from me, because I can’t consume gluten, hence, no regular beers. I was first introduced to the concept of good beer by this site, then eventually realized why it kept making me sick.
When you can’t have gluten, it’s a hot summer afternoon, and you’ve not had a beer for six months, you could do worse than this; you could also do better, but hey - the only choices at the LCBO in Ontario are this at 14 bucks, and another one at an outrageous 17 bucks a six-pack. I’m not pouring this one.
I still know that breweries should be able to do better without gluten, though... Radek Kliber (3687), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario, Canada Jul 2, 2009 Bottle 355 ml
Appearance: Pale pale-golden look with hint of silver . short lived white top. Very poor.1+ Nose: Aromatic , almond like , soft , fruity apple like nose with touch of alcohol.5+ Flavor/Palate : Soapy strong character. Very think bodied. Some grainy character , light green apple like tartness. Dusty cardboard. Gluten free beer… is not working.
DougShoemaker (2830), Toronto, Canada Jun 30, 2009 Fruity nose, apple like, pale yellow, sporting a small white head. Taste is watered down apple juice. Thin bodied, listlous. Poor offering. unclemike (760), Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA Jun 26, 2009 Pours thin and gold. Is that Sake or Elmer’s Glue I smell? Flavor is incredibly sweet, lemon, honey, actually balances briefly before drying out on the finish. A somewhat unpleasant aftertaste, kind of salty and bitter. Neat as a niche beer, not so much as a drinking beer.
carlb (18), East Lansing, Michigan, USA Jun 23, 2009 Light, but sweet nose with a hint of spice (cloves?). I smell no hops. Attractive carbonation, golden hue, short-lived 1/2 inch head. Sweet on the palate. Somewhat lacking in body, but could be a warm-weather quencher. Hints of sake? No malt notes of which to speak, as may be expected. I would certainly recommend this beer to Celiacs, and would be pleased to drink if offered. I am not about to seek it out, however. HogTownHarry (3673), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Jun 18, 2009 Bottle (12oz). Shared by blankboy. Slightly hazy pale gold, no head. Smells like spoiled apple juice, sort of burnt and sweet, alcohol presence. Sort of ugly, dead taste - apple cores and newsprint, it pretty much has NO taste, but what’s there is not good at all. Still, harsh, watery mouthfeel, harsh apple core aftertaste. Friggin’ brutal. DerWeg (620), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 31, 2009 Very pale gold med dense pour, very small fine head and little carb. Almost no aroma, maybe a bit of sweetness and metal. Taste sweet grain, fruit, a little spicy like a strange Québéc ale - dilute and a bit nondescript but certainly not nasty. I don’t care for the finish and feel. garthicus (1040), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 30, 2009 With thanks to GregClow for this one. I’ll replace the bottle to share with the rest of the TO crew for our next tasting..Appearance: Nice golden yellow with a small dirty white head. Aroma: Slightly spicy, leafy (bay leaf?), some sweetness. Flavour: Hmm, sweet and fruity, some sake type notes (due to the rice?). Nicer than a lot of macro stuff available however it’s not great. But certainly the best of the handful of gluten free beers I’ve had.
