Dark black pour, no light penetration whatsover, slight mocha head. Creosote and old coffee aroma. Good bitter flavor with some day old coffee grinds, bittersweet chocolate and a hint of soy sauce. Oily mouthfeel, not as dry as expected. Does in a pinch. Thanks to Aurelius for this one - one of his ale-in-the-mail shioments.

Pour is a black with a small tan head. Aroma is very roasty with notes of peat and coffee. Smells like roasting peat over an open fire. Flavor is roasty with a bit of dark chocolate. Finish is a bit weak but so are most dry stouts. The aroma is what puts this one over the top.

Smells like my great grandmother’s smokehouse - creosote and smokey meat, though I’m sure she didn’t have any beer hidden out there. Opaque at 1 cm, the beer is clear and very dark. Glass-coating, thin, chainmail khaki head. Good label, good appearance, I’ve added the Lakefron 20th anniversary cap to my collection. Buffered coffee, light lactose, nutty roastiness. Medium body, some clinging phenols and tartness in the well-balanced end but not too bad. Very light astringency. This beer scores extremely well for overall drinkability without having anything stand out more prominently than its smoking nose (I crack myself up sometimes...) The beer demands meat -- red meat or something you shot yourself and then roasted. A timely St. Paddy’s selection from Ale-in-the-Mail, March 2007.

Bottled. An almost pitch black beer with a faint red shine under a lacing brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with strong notes of roasted malt as well as lighter notes of coffee. The flavor is sweet roasted combined with notes of cocoa, leading to a dry end with light notes of coffee. The body is a bit thin.

Bottled. Dark reddish brown coloured. Creamy light brown head. Light roast, ligth coffe and some cocoa notes in the aroma. Flavour quite sweet and chocolatish. Has some fruity and light roasty notes. Is quite thin bodied and very dry. Light roasty bitter end. Thanks to Degarth for this.
