Glouglouburp (1915), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jul 21, 2008 In short: A roasted stout with many flavour elements but rather light on taste. Decent
How: Tap at brewpub. First batch, drank a few months ago, a week after its initial release
The look: Black body topped by a small tan ring
In long: Flavours element include raisins, molasses and black chocolate. Roastiness level is average for a stout. Sweetness level is rather low especially for a so-called Sweet Stout but I’m not complaining since I prefer dryer stouts. All that should be fine but the beer just isn’t tasty enough. It even feels a bit airy and leaves a wet ashes after-taste. This is a light session beer that has no real problem but no real quality either. I don’t thing my respectable Montreal drinking partners would have been so kind with this beer hadn’t it been brewed by such a respectable establishment. And I stand by that last statement… except maybe the “respectable” part. Lubiere (3184), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Jun 24, 2008 A deep dark stout with a thin moka head. A nice chocolate aroma, very subdued. In mouth, light chocolate malt, grains, very light for the style but overall, an honest stout. On tap at brewpub, May 2008. tiggmtl (4169), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Jun 23, 2008 Thick sweet cocoa and chocolate with a touch of roasted malt in the nose. Opaque black body is topped by a fine bubbled tan head that recedes to a thin cover and leaves plenty of lace. Biscuity and toasty malts underlie the cocoa sweetness. Dark malt character is subdued and bitterness is restrained and just enough to keep all that malt sweetness in hand so that it is not cloying. Plenty of fruity esters round out the flavour. Clean and fresh medium body with lightly prickly long lasting carbonation. Refreshing even in the extreme humidity of Grand Prix week end. Sampled on tap at the brewpub. beerbuzzmontreal (2697), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jun 10, 2008 The pour reveals a pitch black color with small brown highlights and a thin light brown head. Solid aroma of chocolate, roasted malt and oatmeal. Very good flavor of chocolate, roasted malt and oatmeal. The body is a bit thin for my liking, the texture is silky and the carbonation is moderate. Good stuff. DougShoemaker (2560), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 5, 2008 On tap @ the Brewpub.
Aroma of deep dark wheat, chocolate, and roast coffee, the grains are so inviting, mahogany, sporting a tiny toffee head, Flavour begins with a roasted malt, toffee, pit fruits, cocoa, and again those fine cereal grains. Light bodied, just a slight bitterness. Very tasty!
