(printemps 2007)

On tap at the brewpub. Nice copper colored pour with frothy white foam, some lacing. Aroma of fresh grain, german yeast, something spicy - like a pumpkin ale, strawberries and a bit of doughiness. Taste is sweet, some spicy pumpkin notes, lots of strawberries and a lot of fresh bread too. Palate is well carbonated, slightly mineral and dry. I really enjoyed this one.

Sample. Red amber. Thick white head. Light toast and fruit nose. Thick body. Tangerine on toast flavour. Nicer as you drink.

(Rating #1494)

In short: Red fruits, light caramel and not much else. Boring.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Clear redish-copper with a small off-white ring of foam
In long: Taste is rather fruity with lots of “red” fruits. Sensation of mix-fruits breakfast jam (strawberries, berries, cherries, etc.) mixed with light and smooth caramel and a little liquorice. Very round and velvety mouthfeel. A little sticky. Lack of hops to balance it out. No dryness, bitterness or anything like that. Just that same red fruits and light caramel taste from start to finish. Probably well brewed and true to the style like all Amère À Boire beers but this one bored me to tell you the truth. Every year in March there are few things you won’t see me with in Montreal, a sunburn, a smile and a pint of Bière de Mars.

Deep copper color, with a thick beige head, with a caramelized malt nose, nutty accent, sweet toasted malt aromas follow through on a medium-bodied palate with a nice caramelized malt character, toffee, nutty, and butterscoth flavors leading to a good roasted malt side, that has a grainy, sweet caramelized malt and fruity finish.

On tap: When I saw on their web site they had a marzen the weekend I would be in Montreal I made Herculean efforts to squeeze this pub in between convention sessions. I’m glad I did. This Marzen is very much traditional and great tasting as well. Poured a glorious orange-copper with a rich puffy cap. The nose fills with sweet, bready Munich malts and the woody musty smells of a good marzen. The prime character of this beer is the body….one literally chews their way through the generous bready Munich malts while the plate is tingled with the herbal-woody tones from the hops…near the finish the hops present light bittering….this beer is Teutonic rapture…4 slid down in no time at all.
