Draft. Pours a black body with a tan coffee head. Creamy carbonation, with a light chocolate and coco like sweetness. Nice bitter coffee like notes, and bitter earthy hop tones. Licorice hints, dark chocolate bitterenss. Nice drying finish, pretty roasty. A nice offering.

Question de goût.

Draught, 7.5% at the brewpub. Black colour, small stable creamy brown head. The flavour is sweetish with some chocolate. Alcoholic aftertaste, but rounded off by some oxidised port notes. Low carbonation. Quite good and quite well-rounded.

Initially sweet and cloying in this hot, hot weather, seems to lack roast and coffee character but has a dark winey and dark fruit quality and shows a little spice. Evident alcohol, assertive hop finish, slight soapy palate feel.

L’amere a boire imperial stout  Appearance: pitch black, medium creamy brown head.  Aroma: leather, coffee, chocolate, all those wonderful imperial stout qualities.  Flavour: bitter chocolate, leather, baileys like cream, long milk & whiskey finish. Lovely.

How can an Imperial Stout make you feel like you’re the Russian tsar? Well the Amère à Boire’s does it! First, its darkness compares itself to other Imperial Stouts. Nonetheless, you’re still impressed by how a beer can be so dark. The smell lets you think about harvest. Every ingredient is massively reprsented. You just wish to taste it and that’s what you do. Yep! as tasty as it is smelly. Less bitter than the Dieu du Ciel which is excellent (for me), puts its drink even more appreciable. The strong palate leaves you a lasting souvenir from the brewery you just left. Better drink it last if you predict drinking more than one.

On tap at the brewery. Pitch black with a medium mocha head with good retention. Aroma is roasted malt, caramel, fruits and alcohol. Flavor is fruity with roasted malt, chocolated, vanilla, moderately bitter aftertaste. Medium to full body with a creamy mouthfeel.

Overall : Nice hoppy nose, quite drinkable. Nice balance between hops and roasted malts. Awesome beer.

On tap. Very surprising aroma with more dark fruits (dark cherries and grapes) than coffee and chocolate. Flavor is fruity as well with port notes, brandy and finishes with grape tannins. Mouthfeel could be richer for an IS, but I thought it was more of a dark belgian ale like Trois-Pistoles. Excellent with crème brulée.
