How can an Imperial Stout make you feel like you’re the Russian tsar? Well the Amère à Boire’s does it!
First, its darkness compares itself to other Imperial Stouts. Nonetheless, you’re still impressed by how a beer can be so dark.
The smell lets you think about harvest. Every ingredient is massively reprsented. You just wish to taste it and that’s what you do. Yep! as tasty as it is smelly. Less bitter than the Dieu du Ciel which is excellent (for me), puts its drink even more appreciable. The strong palate leaves you a lasting souvenir from the brewery you just left. Better drink it last if you predict drinking more than one.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap. Very surprising aroma with more dark fruits (dark cherries and grapes) than coffee and chocolate. Flavor is fruity as well with port notes, brandy and finishes with grape tannins. Mouthfeel could be richer for an IS, but I thought it was more of a dark belgian ale like Trois-Pistoles. Excellent with crème brulée.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at the brewery. Last beer served as part as the ’’dégustation’’ we were offered. Big foamy head, dark brown colors. Roasted malts heavy on chocolate, alcohol not noticeable. Overall, as a stout, it didn’t really stand out in a positive way from the other Québec microbrewed stouts. Still, it was enjoyable.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at L’Amere a Boire. Pours a jet black with a creamy mocha head. Caramel, roast, and chocolate on the nose. Plum, chocolate, pear, and a little sweetness. Finishes with a sweet light bitterness, akin to a good chocolate milkshake, with a bit of alcohol coming through at the end as well.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tap at the Brewpub: (Nitro) Pours near black with a thick/dense khaki colored head. Nice smooth roasted coffee aroma- creamy body. The flavor encompasses dark chocolate and burnt fruits underneath. There’s a touch of licorice as well. The roast in the finish is reminiscent of quality coffee. A solid Imperial Stout.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
WOW! Hands-down the smoothest, creamiest, slightly sweet choco/java stout I have ever tasted. The menu did not mention cream/milk, but I suspect this brew has some in it.
Initial tap has bubbles dispersed throughout, settling to a thick creamy head of about 1/2" within a minute. Settles into a constant 1/4" head that just hangs in there, even when you only have a 1/4" of beer in the botton of the glass. Beer is a nice opaque black/brown - looks almost as good as it tastes.
No bottles or growlers for take-home, so I had a second pint. Will have more any (every) time I return to Montreal.
