Deep black color, with a creamy tan-colored head, with roasted malt, chocolatey accent, hint of fruitiness, burnt toast aroma follows through on a full-bodied palate, with a smooth coffee espresso, mocha, even hint of vanilla, chocolatey pralines, roasted malt, black malt, leading towards a soft silky roasted bitterness finish.

Cask at the brewpub
Dark black, nice head, light lacing. Nose of ripe roast, pistacios and plums. The flavor is balanced, lightly salt with some light astringency, no alcohol notes. The finish is also balanced, a bit stinging but a relaxes creamy tail.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at the pub during the 2005 RBSG. Very dark beer with ruby highlights at the thin part of the glass. Very tight tan head like you would expect from a nitro pour. The nose was oily and chalky and reminded me of an old campfire site. Sweetish for an imperial stout with some berry hints, sweetened coffee and alcohol. Dry finish. Nice beer.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Opaque black with a thin, light brown cover of fine bubbles (was this one on nitrogen) that lasted a long time, but not as thick and lasting as Guinness. Aroma of creamy roasted malt with strawberry bubblegum notes. Tangy roast flavour with only moderate sweetness and a very small amount of almost harsh bitterness that comes in very late and is most likely from dark malt(s). Really too sweet for the amount of bittering--I think this beer could use more hops. Medium body and low carbonation.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Served on nitro in a small glass. Black with a thick creamy light brown/almost orange head. Aroma is coffee, and other roasted malts and chocolate with a hint of earthy and slightly fragrant hops. Flavor is a bit watery due to the nitro but otherwise there is a lot of chocolate, roast barley and some residual sweetness from the crystal malts. Medium bodied with a nice mouthfeel. Ive never heard of torrefied barley before, but i bet it helped this beer with the head and mouthfeel.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Nitro. Black in color, dark tan, not quite brown head. Aroma of dark fruit, roast, smoke, and chocolate. Dark malts in the flavor with some cocoa, roast, and black cherry. Medium to full bodied, quite drinkable. A fairly mild and straightforward stout, but very drinkable and pretty tasty.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
07.09.05 Tap at brewpub. On nitro. Black. Even, creamy head. Aroma is cofee and dark cherries. Thin bodied yet oily. Coffee with berry, raisin, burnt fruity cereal. Amazingly coating mouthfeel. Interesting at best, but not the finest of what I had from these guys.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
RBSG05 tap sample. Roasty, toasty aroma with hints of chocolate and a mild sweetness in the nose. Opaque dark brown with a tan/brown head. Roasty, sweet, chocolatey, and silky to start. Very nice and smooth. No alcohol detected at all. A milder Imperial Stout, but it is very serviceable and drinkable.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Modeately thick texture with a light brown head and a deep brown body. Semi-smoky, almost cheese-like scent with charred, smoky malts, lactic qualities - basically not a very complex nose but not disappointing. Cake-like with notes of creamy chocolate, light and candy-like and very smooth on the palate. A very pleasant, smooth chocolate fudge flavor, making this an excellently crafted beer, but average or simple when you get geeky with it and compare it to past favorites.
