No head and almost no carbonation. Clear copper body. Has a mixed berry aroma with grapes. Sweet flavor, like a gingerbread cookie without the bite and drizzled with caramel. I get the juniper at times too. A bit thin, with occasional alcoholic overtones. Intriguing, but not quite there. Though I’m typically a little sensitive to carbonation, this beer could have used a bit. Overall I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt that it’s perhaps been sitting around too long.

Kataja Olut IVB is a very clear, solid, caramel colored liquid with no head to speak of. It has a sweet aroma of juniper berries and a host of herbs that my nose can’t identify. There’s something like soy sauce in the background. It smells like a fortified wine, not a beer. It’s medium light bodied, flat and abrasive. It kind of hurts my mouth. This tastes like... beer gone bad; oxidized and infected. It’s salty and it burns. I don’t know if this is intentional, but I suspect not. Down the drain it goes. There’s no indication as to when this was bottled, but it probably wasn’t recently.

Aroma: Caramel. Apperance: No head, deep rust. Particles on bottom. Taste: Bitter and sour, , tangy aftertaste. Palate: Medium bodied, no carbonation. A weird, weird beer. Worth a try but I wouldn’t buy it again.

Poured from bottle into tulip glass. Corral Liquors in Granite City, Illinois, USA special-ordered this for me. It’s as close as we could get (commercially) to the traditional juniper-rye style from Finland. Nice orange/copper color. Malty sweetness combined with sharpness of fresh rye-bread. Subtle evergreen resin and rounded mouthfeel from the juniper twigs and berries. Thankfully, no noticeable flavor or aroma of hops. Fewer yeast esters than I expected, but I’m sure that’s because this isn’t true Sahti, but rather a modernized, pateurized hybrid for export. Delicious. Considering how popular Blue Moon has become, which is even cloudier and spicier than this, I’m confident this style could become a hit as well. It’s just that no one has even heard of Sahti, or even juniper, for that matter. So, who wants to back me with investment capital?

Sour! (This beer rating was imported from FB and unfortunately lacks any further comments.)

Am Anfang ist das Bier recht süß, wird aber schnell unangenehm sauer, das man das Gesicht verzieht. Furchtbares Zeug, ist das vergammelt?? Test vom 1.10.2006, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 3,4,2,1,5,2 - 2,40

No head, flat-looking and ugly. The nose is distinct and strong, sour and sweet and mildly acrid, not good but curious. Tastes insane, with a honey-sweet maltiness coupled with lemon-tart sour and a toasted, woodsy, herbal-honey finish that would definitely be nicer with a few bubbles. I can’t go so far as saying I like it, but this beer is history in a bottle, so I dig what it represents.

You mean this isn’t supposed to be a sour beer? The aroma seems JUST like a sour, there is a lot of sweetness in there after you try it out a bit more. Not much head, lots of bubbles on the glass, brown and quite hazy. Tastes only faintly of the sweetness from the smell, there is some definate malty buscuit flavour and that sourness at the end. If I knew there was junipers in here before I tasted it I would have expected it to taste like gin, but it definately does not!

Very little head to it, the aroma is that of a red ale with hops and what I assume is junipers. Relatively sour flavor to it, which I don’t care for in a beer. Not sure if its supposed to taste like because this sample might be old.
