4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Transfer from BA review on 5-9-13-
Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served a deep brown color nearing on pitch black. Upon serving there is a two finger tan colored head. The head sticks around for quite some time slowly fading to leave a fantastic amount of clingy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell- The smell is delicious. It is heavy of roasted malt and chocolate with a nice balancing of grapefruit and pine hop smells.
Taste – A roasted malt with notes of a chocolate malt and a bit of vanilla sweetness are present upfront. A lighter grapefruit hop is present upfront but grows stronger as the flavor advances getting to a moderate strength by the end. In the end some roasted coffee flavors along with a bit of pine hop and an almost black licorice like flavor come to the tongue leaving a nice slightly bitter but quite pleasantly balanced flavor to be left on the tongue.
Mouthfeel-The body of the beer is on the medium side in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is average to just slightly below average. The feel overall is very nice for the roasted malt and darker flavors of the brew all the while still maintaining a very easy drinking feel.
Overall – This is a really nice example of a black IPA. It’s very drinkable and flavorful in roasted malt and chocolate flavors with enough hoppiness to give it its IPA nature. Head over heels better than their Hop Hog IPA. Give it a go if you have a chance.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Sampled on draft this beer poured a black color with orange highlights and a medium sized foamy dark tan head that left good lacing. The aroma was toasty coffee, faint cocoa and moderate fruity hops. The flavor was dryish, bitter and roasty with notes of cocoa, coffee and mixed floral hops. Medium length dry and roasty finish with lingering cocoa and hops. Ok and better than most in this style.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at Capital Ale House in Fredericksburg. This was a nice find. The ale poured a deep black with a wonderful full tan head. The head laced down the glass. The aromas were of roasted malts and grain. Hint of pine on the nose. The hops did not dominate the ale. It was milder than I expected. It was excellent with the salmon. The mediium body ale had average carbonation. The finish was bittersweet.
