3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tasted this stout in the Salt Cot, Saltcoats (JDW) on 28th March 2014. Cask, handpump dispense. Ruby black in colour with a thin creamy pale buff head. Short aroma of roast malt but little else. Thin oily mouthfeel and superb lacing throughout. Dark malts give maltloaf base with roast grain notes to the fore. Slightly sweet but dry liquorice flavour present. Not getting the fruit though! Very little in the way of hop resins come through in the brief aftertaste. Finish is smooth and malty with notes of mild coffee and sweet black treacle present. A decent old style Stout and well recommended.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Cask @ Lloyds No 1, Milton Keynes. A lovely mahogany, little head/lacing. Faint aroma of Milo. Taste is sweet with bitter/sour tinges. Not complex but enjoyable all the same. Weak palette, unfortunate aftertaste. Liked it well enough, but wouldn’t order it again by choice.

There a distinct coffee and smoky aroma to this dark oak coloured beer which is framed by a cream head which fades rapidly. It has a smooth feel and its flavours are subtle and caress the tongue with coffee, spice and smoke. Not over lively as a stout should be, well deserving of its awards!
