COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Also available bottled.
Lancaster Black is a classic, traditional stout reminiscent of the beer typically found in Lancashire during the 18th and 19th century. Black combines a complex taste with a rich and full body. At 4.6%, Black may be dark in appearance but is surprisingly crisp with a full bouquet of crisp fruits, spices and floral aromas. Brewed using a combination of Cascade and Challenger hops combined with Chocolate and Maris Otter malt, Black is a stout for the true connoisseur."

A Mes rate. Gravity at Merton Beer Festival.
Deep mahogany coloured with an impressive beige head. A nicely balanced beer with some good smoky and fruity notes and a destinct burnt malt character. Hints of coffee and vanilla in the finish with a light peppery note late on.

Bottle: Pours black with a tall, oatmeal head. Aroma is cola, chocolate, a hint of smoke. Taste is slightly bitter chocolate...dark fruit. Roasty and creamy. Slightly light, but very nice.

Bottled. Medium roast aroma and taste, pouring a deep ruby black. Reasonably dry, but very easy on the palate with a biscuit texture and finish. Nice smooth finish, very enjoyable.

Cask handpull, The Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, Barrow, Cumbria, 16/02/13. Jet black with a skimmed vanilla top lining the glass. Nose weak bitter choc; milky mocha, hint of the gents. Soft, lactic, blackberry crumble dusted with burnt toast, finely shaved bitter chocolate notes. Puff of cigar. Really good.

Bottle version is a fairly dry stout, pleasant without overstating itself. It has a roasted aroma but is mild in character in this respect.

Overall - Reasonable stout but didn’t make much of an impression

chinchill (660) - South Carolina, USA - NOV 16, 2012
16.9 oz bottle poured near black, but actually a very dark, clear mahogany. The head is sudsy and has rather limited duration. A good bit of coffee in the appealing aroma, that also hints of brandy. Less coffee in tasting where hints of molasses and dark chocolate appear. Lasting finish features dark malt and light coffee. Very smooth but medium-light (too thin) body. Low carbonation. O: an acceptable stout with a fine aroma.

Almost black and clear. Has an off-white head, mostly lasting. Aroma has notes of malt, soft laqurice, a bit thin. Nice flavor, harmonic, light dark malts, soft laqurice, sweet and moderate bitter finish. Soft carbonation.

bottle - Pours very dark brown with a small tan head. The aroma is of dark roast malt and coffee. It has a similar roast malt and coffee accentuated flavor. There’s mild bitterness and a medium body. It’s decent though it could use some more flavor.
