COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Also available bottled.
Lancaster Black is a classic, traditional stout reminiscent of the beer typically found in Lancashire during the 18th and 19th century. Black combines a complex taste with a rich and full body. At 4.6%, Black may be dark in appearance but is surprisingly crisp with a full bouquet of crisp fruits, spices and floral aromas. Brewed using a combination of Cascade and Challenger hops combined with Chocolate and Maris Otter malt, Black is a stout for the true connoisseur."

7 Lovely chocolatey and spicy aroma.
5 Jet black, lovely tight beige head.
6 Burnt and sharp retronasals, quite estery. Taste quite simple, mostly burntness dominated, and a bitterness that seems to be due to that burntness. However, it’s not thin on the malty body, and there are clearly some hops contributing too.
4 Smooth palate, crisp carbonation. The finish improves on the taste - here the hops come back out again. Whilst in the mouth they’re dominated by the burntness, where they can form vapours they themselves shine, so we have the aroma back again, with some lovely citrussy hops.
13 This is no jaw-dropper, but it’s certainly a very good stout. For a pasteurised bottle, it’s very good indeed. Right up there with Entire Stout, perhaps.

Cask in the Sun Hotel, Lancaster. Mahogany with a tan head. Quite a lot of roast malt flavour with notes of coffee. Tasty enough, but a pretty average stout. A little thin perhaps.

Tasted this stout in the Salt Cot, Saltcoats (JDW) on 28th March 2014. Cask, handpump dispense. Ruby black in colour with a thin creamy pale buff head. Short aroma of roast malt but little else. Thin oily mouthfeel and superb lacing throughout. Dark malts give maltloaf base with roast grain notes to the fore. Slightly sweet but dry liquorice flavour present. Not getting the fruit though! Very little in the way of hop resins come through in the brief aftertaste. Finish is smooth and malty with notes of mild coffee and sweet black treacle present. A decent old style Stout and well recommended.

Cask @ Lloyds No 1, Milton Keynes. A lovely mahogany, little head/lacing. Faint aroma of Milo. Taste is sweet with bitter/sour tinges. Not complex but enjoyable all the same. Weak palette, unfortunate aftertaste. Liked it well enough, but wouldn’t order it again by choice.
