On cask at the 2009 SPBW Real Ale Fest 10/17/09: Pours a transparent dark copper amber with a thin ring of off-white head. Has a sweet toasty dark copper amber nose with some molasses and raisin character. Starts with good toasty dark caramel sweetness with a hint of milk chocolate before a drier doughy finish. A pretty enjoyable and well-balanced porter.

Growler from Craft Ale. Pours deep brown with nose of dark roasty malt, dark choc, some rauchy notes. Tastes roasty dark malty predominantly, with definite cherred rauchy malt notes, some cacao, fig, blackberry, and a smooth palate, never going sweet but staying roasty, rauchym, and blackberryish. Very nice.

Draught at Capones: Aroma of birch, malts, molasses, and celery. Poured dark brown/ruby in color with a large, dense, creamy, light brown/tan head that diminished but lasted throughout. Clear. Not sparkling. Excellent lacing. Flavor is lightly sweet. Tastes of chocolate, malts, light roasting, molasses, slight tobacco, and light piney hops. Medium body. Dry, chalky texture. Average carbonation. Malty, chocolate and molasses finish is dry.

Tap at Capones. Pours a deep brown with amber notes and a creamy light tan head that left some lacing. Aroma of some light chocolate notes, toasted malt and nuts. Flavor of nuts, toasted malt, light chocolate and some caramel. A bit on the thin side, kind of getting a little too much hop bitterness for the style and aroma and flavor were both at bit on the low end. Not much molasses at all...hmmm

Sampler, at Lancaster location. Pours a clear very dark brown body with a small light brown head. Nice chocolate malt and molassas nose, it really does remind me of Shoo-fly pie. The flavor is molassas dominated with a great balance between the sweet malt and the bitterness from the molasses. Some roasted malt, coffee and just a little bit of hops showing up late in the finish. Th mouthfeel is great, not overly full or sticky like I was expecting, with soft fizzy carbonation. This was the hit of the bunch for me, wish I would have gotten a growler of it to go.

Sampled on cask at Churchkey, Washington DC. Comes a nearly opaque, deep brown with ruby red edges and a frothy, creamy beige head. Aroma is... well, is there an aroma? I guess it smells sweet, a bit of dark toast some crackers. Flavor is nice, sweet, silky, toasted grains, bread, crackers, caramel. Nothing exemplary. Finish is dry and smooth. I didn’t get any molasses or any hop flavors. A big miss.

From the tap poured brown with a small head. Sweet malty flavor with a quick finish.
