3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2013-06-01. Black body with a nice brown head and lace. Aroma is sort of herbal, leafy green notes dry mild roast. Flavour is interesting. First sip is a bit of a kick in the pants, big first impression with dry light roast and coffee like undertones, sweeter malt middle, herbal anise like notes in the finish. 7+ Alcohol is present throughout but restrained for the strength. Very smooth average bodied palate, soft carbonation. Nice stuff, but much better suited to a winter fire than a hot summer patio! Bottle at Mondial de la Biere 2013, Montreal

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled Nov. 1st, 2003 drunk 3/1/14
At 11 years old, this thing looked exquisite. Amber-mahogany body is clear, leaving the sediment behind, while a dark beige head rises up very nicely, showing moderate retention. Wow.
Raisins, plums, chocolate, tons of caramel. Very nice strength of aroma and the oxidation is integrated nicely. Vanilla and madeira notes emerge more as it breathes. This seems very encouraging from the aroma...
And the flavor dosent dissapoint! Malt is still very in charge here, with tons of toffee and caramel and sweet raisin notes. Quite a bit of oxidation, of course, but not dull/cardboard-like at all. The beer still has a touch of vibrancy left in the form of some very light acidity, but I will admit it’s quite given to the maltiness at this point. Clean, with low but natural carbonation still allowing for some relief on the palate.
Obviously way past its intended age but the fact that this stuff is still highlly drinkable and enjoyable (would be more enjoyable if I liked barleywines more than I do), speaks volumes to the brewery. Great stuff. I can see it being very sweet when young, though the increased carbonation and hop bitterness/dryness must offset that somewhat, I would imagine.
Thanks for the trade 9 years ago, Bov!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle shared at CBC Clerkenwell - London. I got this one in Paris. Pours amber-brown with a rich, tan form head. The nose has slightly doughy brown bread, overripe fruits. Big sweet flavor with rich fruits, figs, dates, chocolate and toffee. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming to finish with loads more ripe, dark fruits, touches of smoked meat, figs, plums, dates. Decadent. Delicious.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle thanks to Leighton. It pours very deep brown with a thick light tan head. The nose is earthy, light smoke, meaty, spice and twiglets. The taste is pretty sweet, cola, caramel, candy, dark fruit, wood, raisin and unami notes with a sweet finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. A bit odd, plenty of unami. Not bad though.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
In short: An unexciting sweet and roasty mahogany strong ale.
How: From a bottle at Montreal Mondial 2013.
The look: Dark mahogany body topped by a beige ring of foam.
In long: The malted nose is overcooked caramel covering dark fruits along with burnt nuts and some annoying burnt rubber and new car smell. In mouth the the body feels lighter than expected from a 11% brew and the minimal carbonation doesn’t create much excitement in the mouthfeel department. Taste is rather sweet, oily caramelized malts. port-like vinous/fruity notes, roast, toffee, raisins, almonds, a certain burnt wood sensation. Alcohol is apparent. A bit of a letdown, I was expecting more from this respected french barley wine, low drinkability and without the corpulence of a nice rich sipper. Overall, a rather boring big beer. If you don’t understand that the beer is called XI.I because of its abv it might be because you are in the III out of XX people who don’t understand roman numerals.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Brought to me from France: Pours near black with an off-white head. Aroma is molasses, chocolate. Taste is rather sweet. Body is thick and oily. Aftertaste is sugary. Not exactly my style of beer, but it is interesting enough. Comparatively easy to drink. Alcohol is well-covered.
