rkuhnel (1199), Eureka, California, USA Nov 19, 2008 I am finally getting near the end of the incredible selection from bhensonb and this is one of them, Poured a dark brown with a fat tan head and good lacing .Nose of roasted malts with some chocolate. Rich moufhteel. Lots of flavor with again good roasted malts. Very smooth drinking and quite enjoyable. marcus (1119), Sacramento, California, USA Aug 27, 2008 This black ale poured with a nice beige head and a mellow malt aroma. There is a hearty caramel malt flavor with lots of carbonation. Sticks to the palate. bhensonb (3138), Woodland, California, USA Aug 18, 2008 Bottle from John’s Marketplace in Portland, OR. Beautiful mahogany color with a multi-finger beige/tan head. Aroma of resin backed by citrus. Near full bodied with vigorous, near creamy carbonation. Flavor is quite resiny, backed by heavy caramel, finishing balanced, evergreeny, and mouthsmacking. Just excellent. Makes me think of gin. kitschy (129), Nebraska, USA May 31, 2008 2007. Dark beer that smells like trees. as it warmed the tree smell mellowed and tasted less like a tree and more like a beer being consumed in a forest. A chocolate flavor emerged as it warmed. They didn’t go crazy trying to add too many competing flavors, and did try for something original. Perhaps a bit of coriander would have assisted the mid-palate. Sledge Jr (2721), Omaha, Nebraska, USA May 31, 2008 2007 edition in the bottle from 99 Bottles in Federal Way WA. Pours an extremely dark brown to almost black with a very thin and hardly present off white head. Some roastedness to the aroma, but not much otherwise. Good mouthfeel, as it warms, I get a pleasant burst of milk chocolate. This is like Our Special Ale, if Anchor put not spices in the beer. Still, I get a mild bit of pine and juniper to the flavor. OK, but not great.
