Pours a remarkably clear, flat golden hue with a thin, foamy head that vanishes quickly. Carbonation is not lacking; heavy filtration is likely responsible for the lack of head retention and dullness of colour.

Crisp, sun-dried laundry and lemons great the nose initially. Honey and then lavender arrive next. Spicy, swerving between raw mint leaves and cracked pepper. There are also notes of grain, almost husky--and definitely not wheat-like--and a slight metallic tinge. There are some good elements in the aroma, but there’s also a sense of staleness marring the whole affair. Additionally, I can’t help but feel the aroma is a bit under-expressive, especially given the alcohol content.

A marriage of slick white wine and sweet malts great the tongue with promise, but fail to ever materialise into anything spectacular. Grapes, white bread and citrus carry on throughout, without variation. Strength is on par with a 4-5% abv beer.

The body is only a shade heavier than an average, light session lager and is admirably velvety with brushing, soda-like carbonation.

Missed opportunity, wasted potential? I get the distinct impression that this beer could be something really nice, but that it’s been completely neutered by heavy filtration. Damn, I sound like Clark. Also, this was about twice the cost of 3 Monts, so, no thanks. 75cl bottle, Duvel tulip, bbe 08.08. In memory of Niilo--I’m sorry I couldn’t find anything better to toast you with, little nipper.

Ethereal (2417) - Los Angeles, California, USA - AUG 27, 2007
750ml bottle, Quinns, 12th August 2007 (with Mes and Sim). Pours gold with a nice white head. The aroma is buttery diacteyl and flowery hops. The taste is rich and creamy malt with butterscotch hints from the diacetyl - its presence is evident in the slick finish too. Decent stuff.

A Mes rate: 75cl bottle from Quinns. Clean darkish blonde colour with a slight white head and decent lace. Sweetish aroma with grassy hops and slight diacetyl. Similar straight forward spicy blonde flavour again with slight butterrscotch notes and a clean hoppy finish.

750ml. bottle: This came from the local food store in France. It had a plastic cork that was just about impossible to remove. I wish that I had some pliers. It pours a clear golden color, with a bit of fizziness. There was a fairly decent head on it, but it went away rather quickly. Milder aroma, but pleasant. Notes of spice, grassiness, some malt. No real standouts. The flavor lacks standouts, but is a very nice blend. Some malts, citrus, bitterness, grassiness. This sort of grows on you. Not bad!

(Draught at Au Trappiste, Paris, 15 Oct) Golden yellow colour with huge frothy white head. Very lively, lots of carbonation. Fruity nose with spices, clove and a hint of Seville orange. Fruity taste with citrus (orange, Seville orange), spicy hoppy notes and balanced sweetness. Nice and spicy.

1/3 l bottle. Bright golden color with weak head. Sweet aroma with fruity esters, malt, herbal hops, citrus fruits, vanilla and woody spices. Sweet honeyish malty flavor with herbal hop flavor and some bitterness. A bit too sweet Leffe Blonde like beer.

Good classical "bière de garde" beer with a lot of flowery/spicy aroma and taste. Alcohol is not too present, sweet bitterness, quite refreshing.

Bottle (750ml, Utobeer): Golden, short white lasting head. Spicy aroma with some grainy, biscuity malts. Flavour is quite simple, clean malts and spicy, floral hops. No real funk, but a slight citrus edge. Refreshing.
