An interpretation Biere de Garde made with 30% wheat.

Belle blonde qui titre 7°, composée de malt d’orge et de froment, quelques épices lui donnent un parfum d’agrumes qui font sa notoriété depuis plus de 30 ans.

Lovely gold-foiled bottle from Cave a Bulles in Paris. Why is this a biére de garde on RB? Only because it’s French? Doesn’t matter. Pours bright and gold with a thin white head. Nose starts slightly skunky but that fades to reveal lemon, lemongrass and grassy hops. Inviting. Very light grainy sweetness, faint lemony tartness, and a moderate bitterness riding on sparkling mouthfeel, going pretty dry with a lightly bitter aftertaste. Damned interesting and refreshing.

Bottle, thx to fonefan. A clear, golden beer with a white head. Malty and fruity aroma, rather boring and weak. Pale malt, sugar and a weak caramel in the flavor. Some bitterness towards the finish. Medium body. Quite quaffable beer, but also quite boring. (080412)

On tap at Au Trappiste, Paris. Clear red amber with a big offwhite head. Spicy aroma, hints of ginger bread. Hints of ginger and rye, subtle, but noticeable bitterness, especially towards the finish. Unassuming, but quite an impressive little ale.

Tasting at my place. Courtesy of Fonefan. Warm golden with a slightly sweet aroma with notes of apple and malt. The flavour has sweetness, notes of malt, candy sugar, apple and some citrus. Straight forward but with nothing that makes me remember it.

Pours a remarkably clear, flat golden hue with a thin, foamy head that vanishes quickly. Carbonation is not lacking; heavy filtration is likely responsible for the lack of head retention and dullness of colour.

Crisp, sun-dried laundry and lemons great the nose initially. Honey and then lavender arrive next. Spicy, swerving between raw mint leaves and cracked pepper. There are also notes of grain, almost husky--and definitely not wheat-like--and a slight metallic tinge. There are some good elements in the aroma, but there’s also a sense of staleness marring the whole affair. Additionally, I can’t help but feel the aroma is a bit under-expressive, especially given the alcohol content.

A marriage of slick white wine and sweet malts great the tongue with promise, but fail to ever materialise into anything spectacular. Grapes, white bread and citrus carry on throughout, without variation. Strength is on par with a 4-5% abv beer.

The body is only a shade heavier than an average, light session lager and is admirably velvety with brushing, soda-like carbonation.

Missed opportunity, wasted potential? I get the distinct impression that this beer could be something really nice, but that it’s been completely neutered by heavy filtration. Damn, I sound like Clark. Also, this was about twice the cost of 3 Monts, so, no thanks. 75cl bottle, Duvel tulip, bbe 08.08. In memory of Niilo--I’m sorry I couldn’t find anything better to toast you with, little nipper.

750ml bottle, Quinns, 12th August 2007 (with Mes and Sim). Pours gold with a nice white head. The aroma is buttery diacteyl and flowery hops. The taste is rich and creamy malt with butterscotch hints from the diacetyl - its presence is evident in the slick finish too. Decent stuff.
