The Baron, Knickersby. Heavily lacing tawny amber with a thick chunky collar. Chew of dried sultana and apricot aroma, some jam sweetness and metal. More apricot and creamy fig in the mouth, balanced with wet dough, biscuit, hazelnut, slight ash, chocolate, some chick pea and warming booze. Easily the best of the Langton lot I’ve tried. Sourish, a little earthy and balsamic. Clean, balanced and good.

Cask, Far From The Madding Crowd, Oxford. Orange-gold, small skim of fine white. Caramel sweet aroma, plums, cinnamon, buttered toffee. A comfy sort of aroma. Light plum tartness, fruit sweetness, a little corn. Pleasant late-winter pint.

Cask handpump at The Wellington, Birmingham. Amber with some lacing on top. Not much scent, just a bit fruity with tomato, I think. Bitter, very dry and quite sweet as well. Not much taste to it, though: Some sweet hop in the finish but this is almost disguised by the dryness.

Cask at the Babbington Arms, JDW, Derby 08-09-07 Amber in colour with small white head, not as bitter tasting or even as strong as I’d expected, a fruity and malty average beer.
