acrdz (4148), Pennsylvania, USA May 2, 2008 22oz bottle. Dark brown or purple colored body with a small off-white head. Strange smells confuses the nose: bran is noticed first, but it morphs into some strange musty cocoa, sugar and seedy blackberry smell, with some sort of stem or twig aroma as well. Not a bad smell but not a great smell, just a strange smell, more confusing to begin, but settling out into a nice sour, seedy blackberry smell as it warms. The taste is wet but smooth, lacking any noticeable bitterness, but does develop some dryness in the back. Tastes of mild berries, twigs, bran, cereal grains, and some sweet sugar, even developing some sort of chocolate raspberry/black cherry character over time.
Enniskillen (1532), Port Angeles, Washington, USA Jul 12, 2008 Brown with a nice tan head. Aroma is roasty, caramel, hazelnut, toffee. Taste is a toffee, caramel, nuttiness, with light chocolate. Nice depth for a brown ale. Crit (2221), New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada Jul 6, 2008 Brown, small beige head.
Not much here, light sweet nose and palate, which is spoiled by a light tinny aftertaste decaturstevo (1138), decatur, Tennessee, USA Jun 20, 2008 A very odd aroma that is stangly familiar but i just cant put my finger on what it is. Aight brown pur with an off white head and lace. A very bland flat flavor that just lacks any pizazzaz. No off flavors just nothing at all special about this beer. A tad thin and watery. A drinkable beer but nothing special at all. masonjer (394), Lansing, Michigan, USA Jun 19, 2008 Thanks to Brewdad for a crack at this. Poured a dark brown (duh). Nice malty sweet nose. Flavor is nutty, little bit of chocolate and some spice (pandan?). Fairly straight forward, but definitely one of the better brown ales I have had. ChainGangGuy (1463), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jun 4, 2008 Appearance: Pours a clearish, dark brown body with a small, wispy, off-white head.
Smell: Mild aroma of dark malts, chocolate, and discarded nut shells.
Taste: Dark malts rounded out by a sweet nutty character. A few well-placed drops of chocolate. Vague dark fruitiness. Lightly spicy, earthy bitterness. Then, it’s back to the nuts, baby! Sweetish finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: I’ve been waiting for so many long years for a pandan beer the hit the market, and Laughing Buddha really delivered!
