22oz. Bottle. Root beer colored ale with a nicely lacing frothy collar of foam. Aroma is earthy, with a strong grassy scent, not exactly what I was hoping for. Flavor is a bit more complex, but tastes unbalanced. Grassy flavored hops overpower the mix. If you can get past the vegetal qualities there are some subdued but pleasant notes of chocolate and roasted malt. The mouthfeel of the beer is slightly thin with a strong level of carbonation. Ends with a kick of roast and a sharp, dry bitterness. I applaud the attempt, but both the Southern Tier Iniquity and Stone Sublimely Self Righteous are a substantial step up.

Bomber via trade as an extra from JohnGalt1 - thanks, Toby! Pours clear dark brown with a creamy beige head that lasts a hell of a long time. Leaves good lacing. Aroma is perfumy floral hops, citrus hops, herbal notes, and a little roast. Flavor is caramel, chocolate, and roasted malt along with floral and citrusy/grapefruit hops. Medium-bodied with soft carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel with lingering hop bitterness. Great black IPA overall. These Laughing Dog guys are solid.

22 oz. bottle served in a Duvel Tulip. Opened with a big pop. Lots of carbonation. Poured a deep brown with a huge head of light tan foam. Citrusy hop aroma. More citrus and piney hops in the flavor. Plenty of hop bitterness. Some chocolate malt. Nice lacing on the glass. Medium bodied, the carbonation didn’t really take anything away from the beer. Finished with malt dryness along with drying hops. Nice Black IPA, works for me.

Brewed in the USA... Pours a deep dark brown color with some ruby highlights and a godzilla size foamy off white head and nice lacing. Aroma of mega hops, pine, malts and some citrus notes. Taste of lingering hops, burnt roasted malts, wood and a hint of dark fruit. Mouthfeel is medium in body and a wonderful super dry bitter finish. Wow, this really was a very enjoyable black IPA :)

Deep dark brown coloured body with a copper tint and a VERY thick tan head. Aroma of fresh cascade hops, a nice sweet apricot scent and a good dose of malt tucked in the mixture of those two - very nice and potent. Medium-bodied; Strong assertive hoppy flavours coming through with grass, perfume and grapefruit the most common, then shows a lot of malt and a good dose of sweetness. Aftertaste is very nice, a good hoppy bitterness, then a mix of alcohol and apricots - good. Overall, a better than average IPA, plus the interesting colour make it even nicer! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 02-October-2009, sampled at home in Washington on 25-October-2009.

22oz bottle shared by DuffManSW once again. Rating #167. Super dark pour with a huge dirty light brown head, a ton of carbonation actually. Sweet hop aroma, kind of fading actually, a little past it’s prime maybe. Roasty and a little bitter, it did have a nice hop presence though, pretty good overall. (1034)

Pours dark brown with an off-white head. Huge hop aroma. Flavor was an interesting combo of IPA and roasted malt. Nice.
