3.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
A - Pours a very dark hazy brown. A thick frothy 2 finger light-tan head that refuses to sink. The color is weak but it gets points for the solid head.
S - Pine resin, citrus, roasted barley, old leftover coffee grinds, also a strange arm-pit body odor that Iím not loving.
T - A mix tape of heavy evergreen and citrus. The bitterness is great at first but turns to a chalky aspirin flavor toward the end. A roasted smokey flavor from the black malt. Has a dry mineral aftertaste.
M - Creamy and medium to full bodied. Moderate carbonation.
This is a love hate kinda beer. There are great things and not so great thing about it.
The good: Big on hops.
The bad: Chalky sour aspirin, body odor smell.
I donít know if this is infected or what. Itís good but has flaws.
I did a blind taste test with another "un-named" Black IPA and this one lost.

Very dark ruby-brown with a foamy tan head. Roasty malt with an earthiness and a bit of a hoppy finish. Rather full, toasty, dark.

2.4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Not the best black ipa. The pour on this was not great, it left a look of undesirable beer to drink. The taste was basic, not what I expect from a classic black ipa

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Black pour with ruby edges. Really thick khaki head. Tons of lacing. Aroma is fairly balanced. Mild roastiness and malt sweetness with some citrus, floral, and earthy hops. Taste is very similar. I pick up a little chocolate roastiness. A hint if coffee. Hops are similar to aroma. Mostly citrus, some floral and earthy notes.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Decent CDA. Lots of chocolate and pine. Milder notes of citrus, grass, whiskey and wood, adding lots of complexity. Solid hop bitterness, but not overdone. Pretty tasty.

2.2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Two thumps way down on this.
Way to astringent. It could possibly have been a bad batch. I donít know. But I donít plan to give them another chance. And if this is any indication of how the rest of their beers are, then I donít plan to try any of their other beers anytime soon.
$5.00 for a 22oz bomber.
It had a large khaki colored head, even with a light careful pour, a light 2 inch head formed. It stuck around and was almost the consistency of a meringue.
The beer is black as night.
Thereís not much in the way of a hop aroma, thereís just an astringent smell from the dark malts. It smells like a lot of tannin extraction happened during the brewing process.
The tannin extraction came through in the taste as a really strong astringency. Thereís a pronounced bitterness that lingers after each sip. This is more of an astringent dark malt bitterness, than a hop bitterness. Thereís a light hoppy taste Itís almost an accidental afterthought rather than intentional hop addition though. But either way, thereís no specific hop flavors or aromas to speak of, just a generic light hoppiness.
Is it Worth the Money?"
This is a 22oz bottle of beer and I paid $4.99 plus tax. Honestly, to put it into perspective, my local brew pub brews a beer nearly identical, in flavor and color to this. I was able to fill a half gallon grower for $9.00.
About 2 years ago, I brewed a beer that taste nearly identical to this. That only cost $10 in ingredients to brew a 5 gallon batch.
So I ask again. Is It Worth The Money? "NO"
Itís got some flavors but most of them are undesirable flavors. If you want to try it, then try it, but it probably wonít be a beer that you try twice.
When I bought this bottle, I thought it was going to be this massively hopped, dark IPA, which is one my favorite styles of beer. Unfortunately it turned out to be a rather difficult beer to drink. There was just way to much astringency. And the fact that itís supposed to be an IPA, really left me disappointed.
It has this flavor that usually comes during home brewing, when you steep your dark grains to hot... Actually a better descriptor would be... take your dark grains, throw them into a pot, add some water, then boil the heck our of them for abut 15 minutes. Strain the grain, add the liquid to the brew pot. Thereís no sugar extraction. Itís just boiled grains. Thatís the flavor that Iím getting from this beer.
To top the whole thing off, the lack of hop... well... anything was a big disappointment considering that it was supposed to be an IPA
