Bottle… Pours clear and very dark with a burnt orange hue (when held up to bright light) and a large, fluffy, off-white head. Fantastic retention with cool, weeping lacework left behind. The nose is of caramel and earthy, leathery hops. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and soft carbonation. The flavor is a touch chocolaty, caramely and nutty; however, the tasty, bitter hops blow everything else out of the water. Lengthy, roasted, blazingly bitter finish. A big THANKS goes out to ygtbsm94 for shipping this bottle to me!

Tap at Max’s. Brown with a medium white head. Aroma of chocolate and pepper. Flavor has fresh hops, lots of caramel and a smoke finish. Interesting.

Bomber poured a clear dark brown nearly black with garnet highlights and a lasting creamy tan head with good lacing. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, mandarin orange, light pine, light roastiness and a faint hint of smoke. Palate was light to medium bodied and smooth with a slightly dry finish. Flavors of orange, tangerine, pink grapefruit, light pine and a hint of roastiness with a smooth lightly dry lingering bitter finish.

22oz bottle acquired in trade with riversideak (thanks!). Poured a deep and cloudy brown color with a large sized off white head. Aromas of roast, citrus, chocolate, pine, and floral hops. Tastes of citrus, roast, pine, and some dark fruits. Had a light tart finish. Lacing left on the glass.

Deep amber-tan beer. Aroma is kind of strange. Earthy and a resiny with a very chewy hop presence. Loads and loads of resiny astringent hops on the back with a touch of light herbal character. There is a bit of dark maltiness, but not all that much. I can’t really say I’m a fan of this one.

Bottle received via trade with ditmier. Pours clear dark brown with an average, creamy, off-white head, mostly lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, toasted grain), heavy hops (flowers, perfume, pine), average yeast (sweat, earth) with notes of alcohol, grape, apple, and pear. Medium bodied, sticky and mineral texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness, heavy acidity and bitterness.

Bottle thanks to blutt59. Pours with a small, light brown head and a very dark brown body. Aroma of citrus hops, caramel, nuts and light milk chocolate. Taste is orange and nuts. Light carbonation.

22oz bottle from Charles Street Liquors, Boston, November 2009. More dark chestnut than black. Huge beige head. Aroma is not as hoppy as I expected - light resinous touches. Some subtle chocolate notes. Fairly restrained on the nose all round. More assertive on the palate. The hops are fairly prominent but not particularly bitter. Pretty dry. Some fruity malt with roasty edges and a slightly sharp edge. Tangy hops linger on the finish, becoming borderline astringent in the aftertaste. Light, fairly smooth, mouthfeel. A little fizzy. I’ve had other beers in a similar vein that had more impact but this is a well-made, nicely drinkable example, if not quite hitting the high spots.

Vert dark brown pour. Tons of resin on the aroma and some grapefruit peel. Flavor is very resinous and bitter. Light malt bill.
