On tap at The Front Door Dark reddish brown with an almost non-existent beige head. Interesting aroma with citrus from the hops and caramel from the malt. Not something I’m used to in a beer. It took about half way through the beer before deciding it was great. My palate kept getting confused on what I was drinking. A porter? An IPA? It was like mixing the porter that’s on tap at my house, and the homebrew IPA in bottles. Doesn’t sound like it would be all that good. It is. But it definitely has to grow on you.

Wow, how did this get rated ad high as it did? This beer has a weird corriander/pine/black pepper taste to it. Almost not an ipa? Call it your winter brew and I would understand. Never thought id meet a black ipa I didnt like but I did. Almost has a farmhouse taste to it, but wait...i like farmhouse ales? Is this the first black farmhouse ipa? (keep in mind, I rate my beers for what they are , like ipa , porter, black ipa, ect., ect. Im rating this as a black ipa. Its not a bad beer, just not a black ipa.)

22 oz bottle. pours a deep, oily black with a big tan head. aroma is definitely hoppy, with a nice balance of grapefruit and chocolate malt. flavor is a nice blend of dark malts and piney hops. enjoyed this with one of my favorite Thai meals and the balance between the spice of the curry and bite of the hops was perfect.

Bottle. Aroma was skunky. Turned me off of this beer right from the start and it went downhill from there. Taste was awful and could not finish it. One of the worst that I have had.

Nice hoppy bitterness with just the right amount of sweetness. Pours black with a thin beige head. Not thin. Not thick. Juuuust right John The Beer Snob---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Brownish head with a dark but clear body that allows more light to pass through than expected. Roastiness in the aroma mixed with candy like caramel malt coming through. The hops show up after that, but not potent enough to turn it bitter. I prefer this to other black IPAs with bigger hop kick but suspect some hop fans will think it's not enough. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

S. Philly Taproom. Nearly black with a small ring of tan head. I appreciate that the floral hops overpower the nose but it’s really hard to pick up much of any malt. Taste is a bit unbalanced, lacking the sweet backgone.

Had on draft @ the Laughing Dog brewery and in 22 oz bottle (from the 11Jul2008 bottling). Pours a porter-like dark brown/black with a nice tan head. This smells amazing. Roasted dark malt mixed with flowery, resiny, pine.. just great. Taste is perfect for this style... great malt flavor, nice burnt slight coffee bite and a huge add of resiny, piney hops. Do you like simcoe?.. this has plenty of simcoe and all that it brings. This is a great beer. You want immense hop flavor and aroma and a great dark malt backing.. this is your beer.

22 oz bomber. Pour dark brown with a tan head that stayed for a while. Very heavy malt flavor. Medium body with a slight hop taste that lingers with a slight coffee/ bittersweet chocolate taste. Not as much hop taste as a typical IPA. Just enough to cover the malt.

Pours dark brown with a very thick tan head. Aroma is very earthy - not all that pleasant. Taste is also earthy - not noteably hoppy or malty. Pretty blah. As someone who generally likes BIPAs, this one is a letdown.
