3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours black with a medium-brown head. Aroma of dark chocolate, vanilla, sambuca, earth, and char. Flavor is semi-sweet with similar notes of dark chocolate, licorice, earth, and slight vanilla. Finishes bitter and roasty with less bourbon flavor than I’d expect. Substantial carbonation and average alcohol presence. I enjoy bourbon barrel aged imperial stouts generally, but this seemed to take on very little barrel character and was just pretty ho-hum.

Toasted aroma with a slightly sweet finish. Caramel with a bitter end. True to the style and worth a try.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 9/24/2012. Pours dense pitch black color with a 2 finger dense dark tan head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, molasses, toast, toffee, vanilla, oak, cherry, fig, prune, light char, light smoke, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and oak barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, char, molasses, toffee, vanilla, oak, light bourbon, light smoke, and roasted earthiness. Moderate roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, char, toast, molasses, vanilla, oak, light bourbon, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity and balance of robust dark/roasted malt and moderate oak barrel flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a smooth, creamy, and fairly slick/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice barrel aged imperial stout. All around nice balance and complexity of very robust dark/roasted malt and moderate oak barrel character; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

So beautiful and pleasant smelling...so disappointing the taste and flavor. Smokiness and bitterness overpowers any sweetness.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Ok imperial stout that leans heavily on the barrel taste. Some roast and dark chocolate, with nice dark brown pour with good head and lacing. Finishes with medium bitterness. Tap at Dodge City.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Smell is very cherry like... unexpected. Chocolate covered cherries. black with thick tan head. Taste is medium dark chocolate and a cherry twang? Bourbon in the finish. Pretty good and unique. Body is a bit thin for style but still a bit creamy. Pretty nice but really threw me from what I expected which is nice sometimes.

06.04.2014, 0,65l bottle @ home, courtesy of RobertDale:
Big brown creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet, dark malts, dark fruits, licorice, coffee, dark sugar, caramel, oak, grass. Taste is slightly sweet and oaky, dark malts, dark fruits, sour coffee, grass, caramel, sweet licorice, oak, paper, dark sugar. Medium bitterness, slightly dry mouthfeel. Nice enough, but still far from the sweet vanilla bourbon delight that I really like these kind of beers to be.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Christmas present from my in-laws… I am feelin’ the love for sure! Opened mid-January, 2014. Pours a dark brown body with two fingers of creamy tan head. Nice ring throughout and spotty lacing here and there. The nose is downright inviting; a mellow bourbon, roast, and chocolate aroma. It’s been 4-5 years since I’ve had the base beer (I need to change this, asap), but the barrel treatment really works. Light char and ash, chocolate, and mild espresso. The amount influence from the bourbon barrel is spot-on and complimentary. Nice finish of roast and bourbon and maybe it’s my imagination, but there seems to be a mild dose of floral hops. It blows me away how easy drinking this is. Sure there are some heartier or more complex offerings in the style, but this is sublime. At $6.99 you’d be hard pressed to find a better bba impy...
