3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
This is no better than the non-barrel aged one. Appearance dark brown with no light coming through and a 1 finger brown sugar head. Aroma was sweet dark chocolate with dark malts and a hint of coffee followed by some barrel aroma, very minimal. Taste was sweet chocolate up front immediately hit by the roasted malts. Mouthfeel brought this down with a very syrupy feel. Not impressed by this barrel aged and must say that if there is any difference between the non barrel aged its minimal.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap @ the brewpub, the first stop on TvM’s Bachelor Party Northwest Ale Trail Expedition. Okay, minus a point straight off for serving this in a schooner pilsener glass. Dark walnut brown, ring of white foam. Massive sweet rye aroma, eclipsing everything else. This is like smelling a bottle of Crown Royal! The same on the palate: hot, boozy sweet rye, with the base stout peeking out. Even with passing this around the group it remained unfinished.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at home, picked up while visiting Jacksonville. Pours dark brown/black with a ruby edge and an off white head. Fairly grassy aroma, dark fruity rum stuff, licorice and treacle. Medium to full body, medium carbonation. Dark toffee, booze, licorice, light whisky, rum, hazelnut, lots of coca-cola and burnt toffee to finish. It’s a bit thin and the booze is slightly harsh but its OK.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft pour into a Belgian tulip glass. Pours a near black with a beige head of foam. Good retention. The aroma is ashy and chocolate with some cigar character as well. Taste is sweet and ashy. As I drink it, I pick up more on the barrel. Big body and moderate carbonation.

Aromas of bourbon, chocolate, some red wine, subtle burnt cherry, fennel. Black with a mostly lasting tan head, a little oily looking once the head fades. Dry, some astringency, earthy, woodsy, licorice and/or fennel flavors. Full bodied, boozy.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark brown near black bother you with a viscous beige head. Burnt toffee, ripe plum, oak, vanilla, chocolate, roasted malt. Flavor is a bit lacking. Sweet, finishing with a slightly harsh tannic note. Middle of the road.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Draft. Jet black pour with little head. Aroma is chocolate and bourbon barrel. Taste has a bizarre Windex thing going on and also adds some prominent vanilla on the finish. Not sure what’s going on here.

Label date of 12.30.13.
Poured from a bomber into a tulip on 06.04.14.
A: 2 finger tan head that retains well. Midnight black body with some red at the bottom.
S: Vanilla, bourbon, and chocolate.
T: Vanilla, bourbon, and chocolate dominate. Fig, very slight roastiness, and cherry are subtle.
M: Creamy silk. Perfect carbonation. Not too chewy, just perfection.
O: This is a well rounded BBA stout. It has complexity and is perfectly balanced. There is some alcohol burn on the back end. This is regularly $5.99 to $6.99 in the Seattle area, which is an incredible value.
