COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is made in a typical IPA fashion, with a blend of Crystal malts and heavy late additions of aroma hops. There are a few twists though. The first twist is the blend of hops used; English style earthy and fruity varieties with a touch of American Citrus hops. The second twist is the color; blackish-brown, with a slight roasted character that compliments and adds complexity to the hop bitterness.

(22oz bottle) Pours a mahogany body with medium beige head. Aroma of citrus, roasted malt, pine, and chocolate. Flavor of roasted malt, grass, cocoa, pine, citrus, and earthiness with moderately bitter finish.

On tap at the laurelwood Sandy Blvd. location. Colour...inky black with a thick off white head. Nose...somewhat like burnt grain and spent grain (in a good way) and dusty hops. Palate...dry, almost tannicly oaky, with musty hops, hints of anise, chicory root and a bitterly dry hoppy finish.

8/12/2012. 22 oz. bottle. Pours black with a tan head. Hoppy aromas with dark roasted malt, pine, citrus and caramel. It’s an OK BIPA, but doesn’t really stand out.

Dark brownish-red with an off-white head. The aroma is full of pine and roasted malt. The flavor is quite hoppy. I get a lot of resinous pine notes as well as some chocolate and roasted malt and a low amount of bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Deep black pour with a tight off-white head. The aroma is heavily toasty and chocolatey with a bit of toasted/roasty malt character. Chewy and a bit roasty with some light earthy hoppiness. Not overly hoppy but a decent robust porter.

On tap at The Pillagers Pub in Seattle. Pours an almost black dark brown, with light tan head. Aroma is a complex mix of fruity and floral hops and roasted malts. Flavor is heavy with a sweet malt character and slightly bitter hops and candied cherries. Better than I was expecting.

Sample at the Tap House Grill in Seattle. Pours a dark brown color with a medium foamy tan head that diminishes steadily to a film. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of herbal hops, bready malt and a touch of fruit. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, hops, pine and fruit. The finish is roasty up front with a piney hops aftertaste. Decent all around.

Tap at Fiddlers.

Very dark pour for a CDA, extremely roasty and lactic flavors dominate the hop presence to the degree that it barely seems like a CDA at all. Not that it isn’t enjoyable, only that it’s not got any of the citric fruitiness that I’m used to in some of the better examples of the style.
