3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Had this on tap this evening at Laurelwood’s location on NE Sandy Blvd., in Portland. Colour... deep orange-amber with a thin head. Nose... both piney and citrusy hops. Palate... plenty of froth, despite the thin head, LOTS of hops up front which continue to balance well between pine and citrus, resinous, generous malt foundation, nicely coating and a long finish.

Tap at PIB. Clear red pour, small white head. Huge hop aroma, pine mostly but lovely bursts of citrus as well. Some caramel malt in there as well. Flavor is a near perfect balance between pine/citrus hops and the caramel/toffee malts. One of the best imperial reds I’ve ever had.

Draft. A red beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of grass and hops. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of grass and hops as well as light notes of berries, leading to a bitter finish. The body is thin. Imperial?

On tap at the 2007 GABF: Transparent bronze with a spotty-lacing off-white head. Fresh, grapefruity hoppy nose has good lightly toasted caramel malt balance. Body starts with good thickness and some sweet caramel sugar with a citrusy bittering hoppy presence toward a drier bittersweet finish. Crisp and drinkable, but could use a little more malty character and not as much sugary sweetness. Hop character is quite enjoyable though.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
GABF 2007: I thought this was one of the best Imperial Reds I have had. I told a few people they had to try it. Then it took gold. congrats!!! Poured a deep amber-red color with an off-white head. The aroma was big and fresh with pine and citrus hops. Hints of toffee malt underneath. The flavor was a mix of mildly sweet nutty malt and some fruits. Good amount of piny hops. Very long semi-dry moderately bitter finish. Medium body. This needs to be bottled and sent to my place.

Poured a merky deep amber with a small creamy head and great lacing. Humongous piny, hoppy, earthy, grassy nose and flavor. Bitter beyond belief but with a well balanced malt spine. Hop upon hops makes this quite complex until your palate becomes desolated by the intensity of the massive ingredient bill. Yum!

This is the red to end all reds. Sweet, carmel flavor with mad amounts of hops. Frothy, lacey tastiness that warms your inner most spirit. One of the best brews from one of my alltime favorite breweries. Makes me wanna yell "cockadoodledoo!"

UPDATED: MAY 4, 2007 This is the best Red ale i have ever had. I love how they dont skimp on the crystal malt with this beer like a lot of the reds these days that get most of the coloring from a bit of roasted barley. This beer you get a full mouthfeel of carmely malt and oaky vanilla and some roasty character, a little alcohol flavor and definitely doesnt skimp on the hops either. It has something for everyone.
