Poured a merky deep amber with a small creamy head and great lacing. Humongous piny, hoppy, earthy, grassy nose and flavor. Bitter beyond belief but with a well balanced malt spine. Hop upon hops makes this quite complex until your palate becomes desolated by the intensity of the massive ingredient bill. Yum!

This is the red to end all reds. Sweet, carmel flavor with mad amounts of hops. Frothy, lacey tastiness that warms your inner most spirit. One of the best brews from one of my alltime favorite breweries. Makes me wanna yell "cockadoodledoo!"

UPDATED: MAY 4, 2007 This is the best Red ale i have ever had. I love how they dont skimp on the crystal malt with this beer like a lot of the reds these days that get most of the coloring from a bit of roasted barley. This beer you get a full mouthfeel of carmely malt and oaky vanilla and some roasty character, a little alcohol flavor and definitely doesnt skimp on the hops either. It has something for everyone.

Garnet color with an ivory head. Candy aroma with vanilla notes. Sweet with big vanilla and bourbon. Sweet caramel aftertaste.

This was nice! This has a monster hop aroma, really fresh and clean, piney and full of complexity of different hop characteristics. The flavor is nicely roasted and toasted malts, tons of caramel and toffee, and that is right up front and then your palate is overcome with a wave of hops and that lingers on the palate way into the finish. Smooth

Good clean hop flavror. Very full mouthfeel. Was not told this was a BW at the time and guessed it was a string IPA.

On tap at NW Laurelwood Public House listed on the chalkboard as "Deranger Imperial Red". Clear amberish red with a creamy off-white head. Aroma of green, fresh piney hops. Flavor up front has notes of toasted malt, caramel and then goes into a blast of delicious PINE and Pacific NW fresh, grapefruity/citrusy hops. Malty sweet but backed up considerably by the bitter hops. Although the alcohol presence is there, it is very well hidden. Very smooth, rich and creamy body with lively carbonation. I loved this beer.

(Draft: 2005 Oregon Brewers Festival in Portland, OR) Mmm, smells like fresh hop cones. Nice maltiness lends a good base for the hop aromas. Tasting the beer, this is supposed to be 100 IBUs, but it doesn’t seem that high. It is hoppy and bitter though, that’s for sure. Moderate maltiness, fairly sweet, mild caramel, but it can’t quite compete with the hops. Medium body, clean and crisp from the long lasting hop bitterness. Hazy, amber color, topped by a tall, bubbly, light tan head. A solid double red, and yeah, maybe it is up there in IBUs after all.

(Draft: 2004 Strong Ale Festival, Pizza Port in Carlsbad, CA. Day 1, Beer 2) Fruity and sweet flavor, but less malty than others in the category. Quite bitter with a grapefruit hoppiness, and the bitterness dominates the finish. Somewhat light nose overall, fruity like peaches, some mildly sweet malt, light smoke, a bit sour, but not really much of a hoppy aroma. Medium body, not too sweet or sticky, but with a mild alcohol burn. Dark amber, ruddy color. Sizeable light tan head fades to a thin layer, leaving some patchy lacing.

Clouded red appearance. Creamy caramel aroma, citrus and grapefruit. Strong but smooth hoppy, fruity flavor, pineapple and grapefruit with mild caramel malt underneath.

An odd one. Aroma is vaguely vinefruit, prunes or something. Ruddy red body under a small white head. Flavor is more biting than expected, with a barleywine quality to it. A little harsh for my taste. Mouthfeel is syrupy.

This was a great hoppy beer. To Style this beer gave off a good full flavor of hops and malt. I like what Laurelwood is doing here. It was a hot day and perfect for the event, Oregon Brewers Guild 2005 Dinner.
