Malty chocolate aroma with whiffs of coffee. Flavour is chocolaty, and sweetish. A dense thick beer that goes well with the desserts served in the pub.

On tap at Laurelwood, Portland. Black with tan head. Tarry stout. Lots of choc/coffee/charcoal. Good bitterness on end. Bit too smokey charcoal for me.

On tap at Laurelwood Publick House in Portland, OR. 5 ounce sample. Very roasted, assertive, chocolate and coffee-like nose. Plenty of coffee present. Very pleasant aroma. Opaque black color with a brown/tan frothy head with gorgeous lacing. Roasted, slightly bitter hoppy start, turning very rich and coffee-like later on. Some sweet chocolates are also present, which create a chocolate covered coffee bean flavor. One of the best beers I’ve had on this trip to the PNW.

This was killer. A very well made stout, with lots of deep dark chocolate flavors, rich coffee and a bitter bite with some rich nuttiness. This was dark and opaque with a rich creamy brown head. This is a stout drinkers stout.

Black beer, thick dense tan head. Intense chocolate and cocoa aroma. Flavour is similar up front with a bit of spicy herbal flavour in the middle. Creamy body. Finishes with less roast than the porter had. Lingering sweet chocolate finish. Nice stout.

Dark brown color with a coffee, nutty smell. A little dry for my taste, but a clean smooth finish sip after sip. I had to have two pints to make sure.

GABF 2005: Opaque with small but lasting head. The aroma has notes of coffee, smoky and crystal malts, chocolate, walnut, and grassy hops. The taste starts with a bittersweet Crème Brûlée flavor with a snap of bitter hop and subdued pepper as well. The feel is smooth and ashy dry finishing. A solid offering in the style.

(Draft: Laurelwood Public House in Portland, OR) This is a very dry and roasty stout, quite bitter, minimally sweet, lots of coffee flavor, modest chocolate, some yeasty characteristics. The nose is similar, very dry and roasty, with strong coffee notes. Full bodied, but with the light sweetness, it’s very dry on the palate. Black and fully opaque, even against the sunlight. The tan head settles to a ring, but leaves patchy lacing on the glass. If you like dry stouts, this is a solid one, but since it’s not my favorite type of stout, I’m only able to acknowledge the fine caliber of the crafting while being less enthusiastic about my enjoyment.
