Sampled at the 2012 Lansdale Beer Fest. Don’t remember anything about this one due to the large quantitiy of samples that day.

(bottle - 12 oz) Dark brown pour with a thick tan head. Bitter hops in the aroma over top of a subtle chocolate and coffee blend. Rye dryness at the start of the flavor with a chocolate and coffee middle. Very bitter middle that lingers on into the aftertaste.

Sampled on draft at 3R6P this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy tan head that left minimal lacing. The aroma was coffee, roasty malts, bitterness, smoke and wood. The flavor was bitter, dry and roasty with coffee, a mild herbal note and a hint of smoke. Long finsih. Medium body. Meh.

12 oz bottle from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. This was quite enjoyable and great to see coming from Erie, PA. One of the best rye stouts on the market.

Poured a darker brown with a beige head. Aroma was malted, roasted malt, light spicey rye character. Flavor was roasted, dry, light burnt chocolate.

Very very attractive, dark, with a full dark head. Standard black malt nose, charred, a touch of chocolate. Taste is good, palate is medium, not tons going on here, but pretty good.

Bottle from a trade. Opens with a loud thwrrrrt. Poured in a snifter. Nose is dark, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roast. Black in color with a large brown head that slowly dissipates, lots of tiny bubbles, good lacing. Taste is sharp, assertive dark grain roastiness and bitterness, dark chocolate and a dry, roasted finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation, with a slight bite. A slight earthy, grassy hop presence as it warms. Overall, an enjoyable beer.

Bottle. Pours a flat black body under a one finger tight bubbled frothy brown head that had excellent retention. The nose is roasty, chocolaty, full of rye, some citrusy hops, and a bit of coffee. The flavor is rather hoppy, and the hops mix well with the rye. Nice roasty malt base with plenty of coffee, and chocolate malt, lingering mix of citrusy hops and spicy rye. Medium bodied with soft fizzy carbonation. Pretty nice beer.

Tap at IBC in Pitt. Pitch with a rocky lacing brown head. Sweet nose, grainy an earthy rye but not spicy in the usual way, and wonderfully far from the sweet and sticky goop that has slowly become standard. Full body, husky-grainy with a touch of yeast, strong roast with a tiny touch of coffee, dry and filling and really a nice change of pace.

To read, after the fact, that they were aiming dry Irish Stout, well, everything falls into place, doesn’t it?

Poured a deep black color with a nice chocolate milk head. Very pleasant smell of sweetness and chocolate. Very smooth on the palate with a pleasant body. Cocoa, small amounts of coffee, and a balanced bitterness in the flavor. This one is easy to drink and wonderful.
