This is the beer that started the brewery. Named after the ancient homeland of the Lavery’s. It is rich, dark and smoky. Not for the faint of heart but that’s how we intended it. It has taste of bacon, which is one of the most beautiful images I can image; a bacon beer. A solid earthy hop bitterness with a little astringency from the dark malts. This beer has no better pair than excellent Vermont Cheddar cheese.

Bottle. Different logo than the current picture though. Not as heavy on the smoke as I was expecting, which is fine because I’m a not a huge fan of the heavy smoked beers. Sweet, heavy in the coffee flavor actually. Kinda tastes like a sweet stout with smoked malt, something like the Left Hand Milk Stout or something.

sample from Nate at bainbridge. Pours brown with light to medium coffee head, not much lace. Thick but not sticky and somewhat refreshing for style. Notes of chocolate malt, smoked almond, roast, peat, and light barrel. Nice

Bottle from Liquor Outlet. Dark dark brown with thick coffee ice cream head and lace. Mild smoky aroma with raisiny fruit coffee chocolate cinnamon and sourdough bread. Very mild chocolate roasted coffee smoke and fig/raisin fruitiness. Roasted ashy fruity chocolate sweet finish. I realize you don’t want too much hops against the smoke, but some hops are definitely needed here. Surprisingly thin and watery feeling. Soft carbo. Meh.

Tap at brewery. Pours dark brown with thin, beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, milk chocolate, light smoke, faint pork, and faint dark fruits. Flavor is dry, roast malts, chocolate, earthy hops, and some dark fruit sweetness; good flavor, but a little too thin. Light/medium body and medium carbonation.

Draft at the brewery. Pours opaque dark brown with a thin, fizzy tan head. Tastes like strong roasted grains, malt, toast, booze. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like nutty, roasted grains with light burnt toast.

UPDATED: DEC 26, 2014 Sampled on draft this beer poured a black color with a large dark brown head that left good lacing. The aroma was smoke, bacon and wood. The flavor was roasty smoke and bacon. Tasty but lacking in complexity. Long bacon finish. Medium body.

Interesting beer, recent US trip. Balanced in smoke but a bit too bitter. Black with a little head. Worth a try.

Dastardly appearnce of inky black goodness. Invites an extra long gulp with milky smoothness. Ingredients engage in a polite battle in your mouth for dominance, but generally doesn’t stay long enough for a true winner to emerge, resulting in another quick swig to reestablish the battle. Very drinkable, lighter than appears and great addition to Irish beer arsenal.

UPDATED: MAR 18, 2014 Bomber in trade from jbwimer. Pours deep dark brown to black with a one finger dark khaki head.aroma is more roast than smoke, with big chocolate notes, still some definite smoke, and a hint of earthy coffee. Flavor is lots of roasty chocolate and awesome, some long smokey finish going on here, and ends with chocolate and even a hint of vanilla coffee (maybe my taste buds are broken). Really rich flavors here. Dark fruits begin coming out just a tad as I go. Huge mouthfeel--especially for only 7.5%--with medium carbonation. I am amazed at the body on this. This might be one of my new favorite porters. Must get more.
