On tap at Mad Taco. Pours an opaque brown with a thin head that fades after a few minutes. Faint aroma of roasted coffee over hops. Flavor is carried by a full body, with a slight refreshing effervessense and hits across a broad array of salt, bitterness. This tails off nicely to an slight aftertaste of root beer. Lovely big IPA.

Big thanks to tobelerone for throwing this in on a trade, I was happy to be able to try a Lawson’s with a friend. Dark black color, standard appearance, decent head. Aroma is piney hops. Flavor is oily hops, pine, citrus and a hint of dark malt on the end. No burnt or roast flavors really and I like that because i think sometimes they clash with the hops. This was one of teh better black IPA’s I’ve tasted.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 DavoleBomb (1389) - Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 12, 2012
Poured into a perfect pint.
3.5 A: Black color. One and a half fingers of frothy/creamy light brown head. Retention is good and a short ring of lacing is left.
3.5 S: Formitable roastiness with notes of molasses. Citrusy and earthy hops with emphasis on orange, grapefruit, and pineapple. Not bad, but the aromas don’t flow together that well.
3.5 T: Taste is like the nose. Lots of roast, some molasses, and some caramel. Orange, grapefruit, pineapple, and earthiness fromt he hops. Lower bitterness from the hops, which I think is a must for the style, so at least they got that right. Again, decent.
3.5 M: Lighter medium to medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Decently creamy.
3.5 D: Not a huge fan of the style, but this one isn’t bad. A little better than average for the style.

Finally opened this up hopefully it hasn’t fallen off. Enjoyed in a standard pint glass with buddies at around 40 degrees F. Almost midnight black, solid head that stuck around for a while..maybe my glass wasn’t clean? Smell is very roasty with tangerines and nuts. Taste is roasted malts, hint of chocolate, nuts like almonds and a mild bitterness. Pine and Citrus hop flavors and some oakyness at the finish.

Sampled from bottle at DLD ’12. Pours a dark brown/black color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma has roasted malts, chocolate, with a hop profile that is citrus, earthy and mildly herbal. The flavor shows a nice balance between the roasted malts, chocolate and even sweeter caramel with the bold citrus and earthy hops. Black IPA’s are something I only enjoy when done very well and this fits the bill.

Bottle at Paul’s. Dark chocolate pour. Aroma has notes of perfume, flowers, and orange. Hop heavy flavor with plenty of citrus and perfume. Minimal chocolate malt flavor. Perfume is prominent in the finish. This is an IPA first and foremost, and I prefer that to overhopped porters.

Bottle. Pours a deep dark black with a large dense creamy tan head. Roast, sweet cocoa and malt, smoke, and sweet lime and citrus. Just on the thin side of medium bodied, roast comes through right away, big and bold. Nice earthy pungent hop notes follow, mellowing into some toffee and cocoa powder. Long earthy roast, dark and char filled, long bakers cocoa and bitter grapefruit pith on the finish. Very nice.
