Bottled in April 2011, this ’once a year beer’ is a slowly fermented single-batch brew made during 2010 spring sugaring season. It quietly rested for a year in a single oak barrel from Saxtons River Distillery that previously held Sapling maple liquor. Our recipe has no water added, and uses only barley, hops, yeast and concentrated maple sap from our friend Paul Marble of Fayston, VT. This ale is bottle-conditioned and will age elegantly for many years.

Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured clear copper color with an average frothy off-white head that lasted with good lacing. Medium to heavy complex toasted nutty, maple mead and wood aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy vanilla maple flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration with a small alcohol bite. This is a complex thick standout beer.

Bottle @ Stephen’s house, courtesy of Stephen. Thanks! Hazy dark orange appearance with a small cream colored head. Rich, delicious real maple syrup, quite spicy, thick toffee, big brown sugar aroma. Thick, brown sugar, somewhat syrupy, real maple syrup, a touch fruity, vanilla, light toffee flavor. Not sure how much I could drink but quite fun.

500mL #116 of 750 thanks to yourefragile! BA version talking about maple liquor barrel aging on the label. My first Canadian Strong Ale rating! Pours a clear, deep red amber. Weaker but present yellow foam. Nose is barleywine, caraway seed, fennel pollen, and what I guess is maple liquor. Moving to straight up Grand Marnier, orange cognac. Taste is first is the closest I’ve seen to straight up maple syrup, good syrup too, none of the BS corn syrup stuff. But it moves to orange peel, cognac, Grand Marnier, I’m really liking this one. Very much a winter sipper. Palate is thick, spicy, drinkable. Not even too cloying. A treat! 8/3/8/4/16=3.9

16.9 oz. bottle shared by jmborggren- thanks again, Jeremy! Bottle 89/750 (looks like 150, though). Pours a hazed orange-gold with minimal head. Aroma of maple syrup, brown sugar, dried apricot, golden raisins, caramel, and vanilla- sweet and bourbony. Flavor of bourbon, sweet malts, maple, apple, raisin, wood, brown sugar, and vanilla. Light-medium bodied, with low carbonation and a flat, warming mouthfeel. Could stand some carbonation for a better mouthfeel but otherwise a pretty nice, interesting beer.

16.9oz bottle, shared by jmborggren. Bottle 89 of 750. Mostly hazy, darker orange color. Thin bit of off-white head, couple bits of lace. Awesome nose. Nice maple, oaky, caramel nose. Some orange zest. Moderate sweet taste. Some alcohol warmth in the finish. Big body. Light carbonation. Lightly sticky finish. Tasty stuff. Love the maple. A bit sweet and boozy, though.

Pour out of 500 mL bottle, big thanks to Steve for the pour! Aroma has notes of big maple syrup, vanilla, honey, some sweet sugary plums and raisin, hints of earth, touch of sweet dark fruits and sweet biscuit. Taste is a mix of very sweet maple, vanilla, floral honey, touch of sweet fruits finishing fairly sweet slightly boozy. Very nice.

500 ml bottle shared by Kan. Thanks! Pours a nice glowing orange amber pour, a bit amber with a nice offwhite lacing head that dies to a small head, laces small. Aromas are sweet malts, taken over by a big maple syrup influence, sweeter sugars with vanilla and oak. A touch of orange peel, but very sweet overall. Initial is a bit heavier bodied throwing oranges, maple syrup which sticks pretty big into the backend. Sweet bready malts, lots of maple syrup, with vanilla, with a lot of wet oak. Far too sweet with me. Into the middle more sickly sweet malts and a ton of maple, vanilla. Finish is sweet, lingering ABV throws some good heat, but gets a bit distracting with the sugary sweetness. An interesting beer that is far too sweet for my palate. Interesting, but not a great example of the style. An interesting experiment

(500ml bottle) clear medium brown, creamy offwhite head. Nose of oak, huge maple, alcohol, caramel, very sap like. Taste of saccharin, maple, alcohol, caramel, linger has an odd artificial nature.

16.9 oz bottle to snifter (shared by jmborggren). Looks good; a slightly cloudy deep orange with razor-thin off-white lacing. Smells solid; sweet and boozy with notes of maple syrup and oak. Tastes like it smells with a nice, smooth mouthfeel. Good beer.

16.9 oz. bottle shared by jmborggren bottle 89/750. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with zero head. The aroma and flavor have a big maple, caramel, brown sugar, honey, i think you get the picture sweet, fruity, some oak and earth to offset slightly. There is some alcohol too, but I think it goes with the sweetness pretty well. If this had some carbonation, this may pop even more.
