Knowing the breweryís size, itís very possilbe the kegs have some descrepency, but the beer I was poured at the (favorite) Parkway tavern in Tacoma was nearly undrinkable. Flat pour with no head, little aroma other than an astringent cold spiciness and a dull mahogony color. Thick over-the-top portions of nutmeg or all-spice, with no real solid malt to smooth things out. I definitely need to give this a second try, but Iíll be very cautious.

22 oz bottle from Rothís Vista Market in Salem. $2.99. This seems rather late for a winter thus i suppose the low price..plus it was out in a warm shelf so here goes! Reddish amber coloured ale here, with a thick and creamy creme coloured head. Nose is simple caramel malt with faint hints of cinnamon sticks, nice. Smooth taste of burnt toffee, spice and the faintest hint of orange peel, finished black coffee. OK Mouthfeel is OK low carbonation and long lasting bitterness. Not bad but past its best.

22 oz from Chuckís @ $4.59. The choice was between this and a Victory Baltic Porter. The Victory rated way higher according to the RB crowd but this was practically half the price. Good choice. Doesnít really smell like much. Some kind of nondescript spiceiness and a dash of cinnamon that seems dropped in after the fact. Tastes solid but not overpowering. I will have no trouble drinking the full bottle. Decent hop profile but it plays second fiddle to a smorgasbord of malt (thank you munich, brown, and vienna!) Wish it smelled better.

Bomber. Pours a dark brownish amber color with an inch of foamy tan head. Lightly toasted malts and brown sugar in the aroma as well as some toffee and butterscotch. The taste has a strong caramel and bready malt base along with some spice, date, orange peel and alcohol notes. Just a little bit of a citrusy hops presence in the background. Mildly creamy mouthfeel with moderate carbonation and lots of dark sugar sweetness in the finish. Overall, itís a sweet and malty blend of a Winter Warmer with a Barley Wine that should best be drank in small doses.

Bomber served in a tulip. Pours mahogany brown with a small-medium light tan-red head. Subdued aromatics, but definitely sweet and malty. Candied dates and spices. When it warms its more dates, balsamic vinegar, and molasses. Pretty complex but not my favorite. Medium body, little carbonation, oily texture. The flavor is like the nose: A hodge-podge of spices over a mildly roasted brown ale. Average finish of malty sweetness and a little saltiness.

Orange/Copper color with an off white head. Citrusy smell making me think there would be hoppy taste to it, only to be proven wrong upon my initial sip. Very malty flavor and thatís it. the finish is quite watery. Kind of dissapointing.

Quite a nice holiday ale. Not up to the depth and palate of Jubelale, but itís quite drinkable. Expected malt and hop notes, but this one isnít too sweet...something that is a turnoff for me with some holiday beers.

3fourths (7797) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 27, 2009
22oz bottle, purchased in Portland 12/2008. Clear bourbon brown colored body, little to no head. Nose: buttery caramel malt, oily nuts, olive oil, little to no hop aromatics, minimal spice/cinnamon noticed. Orange gets lost. Crystal, munich, vienna and brown malt are pretty much this entire beer - little to no chocolate malt presence. Body is medium to light up front, mildly frothy over the middle, dissipates quickly in the finish - leaves the mouth with a stale/ashy paper flavor (slight oxidation). Some medium hop bitterness and some orange and cinnamon flavors actually show up across the middle - makes it more interesting that a straight crystal/munich/vienna double-brown malt-bomb. Peppery and zesty, light citrus bite works well.

22oz bottle from Liquid Solutions. Pours a murky ruby brown with a creamy beige head that diminishes to about 1/4 inch thick, spotty lacing left on the glass. Some spice, citrus and toasted malts on the nose. Flavor had a nice combination of sweet spices, notice some clove and cinnamon.
