At a tasting, thanks zvikar, creamy long lasting light brown head, very dark brown but not completely opaque, aroma of mollases, dark bread and some pruness, dark chocolate, and some sweet potatoes in the back, flavour of coffee, mocha and charred wood, quite dry, light bodied,. the aroma promises much, the flavour dissapoints. Fair.

12 ounce bottle best by 5/14 on the bottle. Black with tan head. Creamy with a bit of milk stout taste to it. Not sure what sweet potatoes do. Taste is porter/light stout.

(from 2012 notes)
Growler fill from the first pour out of a new keg at Moondog Growlers. Poured about 1 hour later into a Porter Bar goblet.
Pours a dark reddish-brown, and sits almost black in the glass. A modest but creamy tan head fades fast and leaves little lacing.
Aroma: dark roasted chocolate malt, sweet with perhaps some sweet potato; faint earthy hop notes.
T: A sweet and creamy flavor, with hints of milf chocolate and coffee. Blemished by a faint sour note that, to be fair, is characteristic of milk stouts. The taste actually deteriorates a little with warming, becoming more sour and less malty, unusual for a stout.
M: Creamy smooth; full bodied; acceptable low carbonation.
O: Another (with pecan beer) disappointing offering from this brewer, but better than the pecan ale and certainly a decent brew.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks zvikar. As Jeff Stout. Black, not completely opaque, with a tan head. Lovely aroma of milk chocolate and nice roasted sweet potato notes. Sweetish flavor, kinda thin, a bit milky, with some roastiness, vegetal notes and some mocha. Mediuim-bodied.

I appreciate the effort, but this didn’t work for me. Aroma was ok, roasted stuff and something else - wtf does sweet potato smell like?? taste was odd in middle; someone else stated play doh - that sounds about right - maybe vegetal?? lactose also in taste. NO.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
12oz bottle poured into a tumbler glass.
Slightly hazy dark brown color with a small mocha head.
Sweet chocolaty nose, with some earthy notes and fresh coffee.
Thin coffee flavors, with dark cocoa, sweet creamer and mild bitterness.
Light-med body, somewhat oily, a bit creamy and overall not rich enough.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
My Bottom Line:
Vanilla and milk chocolate benefit from roasted edges and earthy potato depths for a nourishing dessert brew.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the brown-edged black.
-A fruity touch gives the flavour profile a little more complexity.
-The high sweetness and soft prickling of carbonation don’t help drinkability.
-When in the mood for dessert, this is a quality sweet Stout.
-The finish lacks bitterness or spiciness to balance out the sweetness.

Had a bottle with a bowl of soup at five loaves in charleston. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate and earth. Mouthfeel is medium but enough for a lunchtime brew. Balance is nice between sweetness of lactose and sweet potato (maybe too subtle) and bitterness of coffee and chocolate. Not much in the way of hops but not bad for a state I don’t think of as a brewing powerhouse.

12 ounce bottle labeled "Lazy Magnolia Jeff Stout" from the Beer Of The (Every Other) Month club. Opaque brown hue, sweet aroma of sweet potato and rock candy with some good roasted malt character, flavor of coffee/roasted malt/some sweetness with a little chemical taste distracting from the flavor somewhat. Body is a bit thin for a stout but not bad overall.
Tasted on September 7, 2013.
