Southern Gentleman, meet Southern Belle. It’s part of our 2013 lineup y’all. The flagship in our barrel-aged series, the Southern Gentleman features our Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale conditioned in bourbon casks. While the Kentucky spirit melds evenly, it’s not for the faint of heart. Just as its predecessor, the Southern Belle also incorporates our award-winning Southern Pecan. The twist is the tub. Smooth as a gentle kiss, the Southern Belle is instead aged in Pinot Noire wine barrels. It’s sure to melt your heart.

Draft... Pours cloudy and ruby with copper highlights and no head. Smells woody and vinous with no brown ale character remaining. Light-bodied and watery with fizzy carbonation. The flavor is well-balanced, but is also thin and bland, sharing only a hint of red wine. No brown ale components here at all. Short, crisp, dry finish.

Clear amber color with fleeting head. Bourbon, grass, swamp water aromas. Medium body with average carbonation. Grassy, vegetal, swamp water flavors with vanilla whiskey---not really good.

On draft at Proof. Poured a reddish brown color with some tan-white head. Aroma is slightly biscuity and has a bit of caramel; however, it’s got a funky sour yeast predominating smell. Taste is like that of a Flemish red. A bad Flemish red. Just sour and awful. Medium hop presence. Light body.

10/18/13. On tap at Proof. Amber pour, basically no khaki head. Wow, this is messed up - definitely infected. Sour all the way. Gross, sour, lots of vinegar, mild wine aspects, some sweet brown ale lingers... cereal grains, more sour and vinegar. No thanks.

Tallahassee, Fl - on tap at Proof Brewing Company. Medium copper pour, light off white head. Vinegary aroma, hints of pickles. Flavor is of Fruity Pebbles cereal and vinegar. Too sweet and too sour at the same time. The wine barrel thing ruins this one - which is a novelty that I think is past its prime. Passable mouthfeel. Not good - back to the drawing board on this one.

On tap at Proof. Amber pour. Sweet malt, wine, nuts in the aroma. Tastes are as expected: a brown with a wine-y twang to it. Caramel, little woody. Grew on me. 7.2

Pours a hazy copper on tap with a thin ring of lacy off-white head that leaves nice lacing. Nose of sweet vanilla, dark fruits and hint of wood. Taste is odd, funky up front, sweet scotch ale type middle, and a fruity end. Good, interesting, definitely worth a gander.

Sampled at the Gulfport airport. Had a very light color and not much aroma. The taste was honey sweet (sweeter than honey, actually). The body was thin with a bourbon backbone. The back end was also sweet. Did not look or taste like a brown ale.

Brown. Thin. Citrus. Sweet bourbon. Needs more body. Pretty disappointing. Just really unsubstantial.

Orange (which raises the question - what kind of brown ale is orange?)No head. Smells winey, caramel and toasty. Flavor is oddly woody, with a good mix of caramel and wine in the finish. Some floral notes, too. Pretty tasty.
