crizay (1056), Brook Park (was Tampa,FL), Ohio, USA Mar 6, 2008 Thanks to BrentFeesh. Clear Brown/red pour with very small faint white head. Aroma is slight caramel. Flavor is caramel with a hint of nuttiness. There’s really not much pecan going on here with a dry chalky aftertaste. Again there is some nut flavor but really it’s just straight bitter caramel. Thin bodie and lacking in carbonation. Nothing exciting about this one.
deepsouth (22), biloxi, Mississippi, USA May 9, 2008 this is a local brew for me, so i have had the pleasure of drinking it from the tap on several occasions. i enjoyed this tasting more than those, since it’s first time i actually avoided the dreaded frozen mug compliments of our fine establishments.
i drank the beer out of one of the new sam adams glasses.
now for the beer...
appearance is very nice. it poured a medium brown with about two inches of head that dissipated about a third the way down the glass. lacing was nice and there was plenty left to see by the time i finished this brew.
the smell was good. not necessarily knock you out good, but very nice for a brown ale. the pecan is definitely in there. the smell is much better as the beer warms and the pecans come through superbly.
the taste is very balanced throughout and it finishes quite nicely.
the mouthfeel was just average. it was a bit thin, but not even close to unacceptable. i noted that upon warming, this beer was delightful. i think it’s better at a warmer temperature.
the drinkability is off the charts with this one. it really would be a great session beer. i’m glad these come in six packs now.
Snojerk321 (714), San Diego, California, USA May 2, 2008 Pours amber with a fingers length head that is white and initially rocky. Smells very nutty with some nice chocolate and caramel notes. Taste is very nutty and sweet with pecans dominating everything. Different but rather one-dimensional even for a brown ale. Gregis (739), Overland Park, Kansas, USA Apr 30, 2008 Sampled at DLD 2008. Pours a clear orange-brown with a thin beige head. On the nose are sweet toasted malt, caramel and a light pecan. Light to medium-bodied and slick with a lightly woody, dry finish. The flavor follows the nose with a bit more emphasis on the pecans, at the finish. This is a pretty nice session brew with the pecans playing a supporting rather than primary role. Cornfield (4215), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Apr 30, 2008 Thanks to a BA guy who was hanging around the The LoSBD table at DLD. Unbeknownst to him, he gave me a new state. With my dietary woes, I get much of my protein from nuts and beans. I’m sure glad that this was seasoned with the former. From the bottle it poured a light brown body (chestnut, perhaps?) with a modest white head. It has a sweet worty aroma enhanced by what seemed to be a pecan extract. Just enough of a soft nut bitterness is added to the flavor to keep it from getting cloying. Sessionable. <font size=-4> Dark Lord Day 2008 at Three Floyds, Munster, IN, 4/26/2008.<font size=-1> GAManiac (63), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Apr 29, 2008 Pours a clear brownish amber with a small dense head which dissipates very quickly leaving very little lacing or foam. Aroma is of sweet malts, caramel, and, of course pecans. Starts off with a very sweet malt blast followed by a strong roasted pecan flavor with hints of caramel. Finishes with a light hoppy bitterness. Medium bodied and relatively creamy for the style. Carbonation fizzed a little on the tongue. I could drink this one all night. I would rate this as one of the better nut brown ales I’ve had and would definitely seek it out.
