3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 ounce bottle
If you are heavily into rye IPAs then this beer could be up your alley. To me it goes all in on the wrong things and falls short in most of them. It won’t keep me away from Lazy Magnolia in the future yet I have slightly lower expectations going forwards.
Aroma / Appearance - The semitransparent amber body settles below soft white snowy head. Rye, mulched leafs, and a slightly harsh bitterness push things too hard too quickly to be enjoyable.
Flavor / Palate - Rye toast, almond butter, and warmth permeate every sip. The rye aspects mostly overwhelm any IPA aspects leaving behind a trail of bitterness that falls just short of the finish line. I don’t regret the purchase but it could have been much better.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a hazy golden/apricot with a small light tan head. Nose is grapefruit and floral hops, a bit of pepper, some rye bite at the end. Both sweet and bitter on the tongue at once, really well balanced, alcohol is well hidden. Rounded mouthfeel, oily at first and dry and chalky at the end. Interesting beer. I like the rye bite.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 ounce bottle poured into a brandy snifter. The beer is a hazy copper color with a white head of foam. Good retention. The aroma has strong pine and resinous qualities. Some lemony zest is going on, too. Much sweeter than expected. Sort of reminds me of a Tom Collins. There is a strong gin character here. Bigger body. Subtle carbonation and softly spritzy mouthfeel. Decent, and fairly enjoyable.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
bottle @ Double Shoppe / Ocean Springs MS --- Aroma of full-bodied caramel malt and rye. Cloudy medium amber with a two-finger beige head, cobwebs of lace. Taste is caramel malt infused with solid bitter rye that adds medium fizz in the swallow before sweeping to a finish that adds only a little hop bittering. A big, balanced brew, but never heavy. Recommended.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottled from Taps and Crafts. Light caramel and creamy malt drive forward at first, followed by an impression of grapefruit, then a sharp spike of alcohol. Once the alcohol fades, a strong, warm aftertaste lingers.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a heavy flocculated brown. Outstanding head volume, very good retention and world class lacing.
Outstanding nose of spicy rye, citrus hops (orange, tangerine) and a rich caramel and biscuit background.
Light medium body with a smooth texture that has creamy moments. Normal carbonation level with a bit of effervescence in the middle and a fair amount in the finish.
The flavor profile has the potential to be outstanding, but fails to cover the alcohol. What results is a nice citric hop flavor accompanied by the rye over a rich caramel in the beginning. The middle brings a mild bitterness that has both rye and hop characteristics that have pine aspects as well. Then comes the alcohol and it overwhelms everything from then on. The brewer snatched defeat from the jaws of victory on this one.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottled 8/14/14 – Aromas of rye, figs, orange zest and marzipan. Small bespeckled amber liquid. I say bespeckled because it appears hazy, but after further review there are small bits floating about. Smallish ecru colored head. Sweet from the start. Caramel, light licorice and mild fruit., Licorice nearly always throws me off. This one is no exception. Some light rye spice. But the licorice is still distracting for me. Perhaps a fresher sample might have swayed me to like this more. 4/15

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Looks good at pour. Glows orange in the glass, a touch hazy, medium khaki head. Restrained hop nose is piney. Flavors are weird. Strong hop resins, grass and pine, acrid sickly sweet grainy malts, burning alcohol finish. I guess the rye is the source of the strong graininess, but I don’t understand the weird sweet-heavy palate and I guess I’m not a fan of the spicy resiny Zythos hop.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
10 ounce sample on tap at Bangers in Austin. Aroma has some spicy, peppery rye hints. Some grapefruit citrus is also present. Transparent amber body with a medium yellow head. Starts with some sweet, caramel almost fruity maltiness. A little rye spiciness in the middle. Finishes with a floral hoppy bitterness that is mild. Low carbonation.
