Pours a heavy flocculated brown. Outstanding head volume, very good retention and world class lacing. Outstanding nose of spicy rye, citrus hops (orange, tangerine) and a rich caramel and biscuit background. Light medium body with a smooth texture that has creamy moments. Normal carbonation level with a bit of effervescence in the middle and a fair amount in the finish. The flavor profile has the potential to be outstanding, but fails to cover the alcohol. What results is a nice citric hop flavor accompanied by the rye over a rich caramel in the beginning. The middle brings a mild bitterness that has both rye and hop characteristics that have pine aspects as well. Then comes the alcohol and it overwhelms everything from then on. The brewer snatched defeat from the jaws of victory on this one.

Bottled 8/14/14 – Aromas of rye, figs, orange zest and marzipan. Small bespeckled amber liquid. I say bespeckled because it appears hazy, but after further review there are small bits floating about. Smallish ecru colored head. Sweet from the start. Caramel, light licorice and mild fruit., Licorice nearly always throws me off. This one is no exception. Some light rye spice. But the licorice is still distracting for me. Perhaps a fresher sample might have swayed me to like this more. 4/15

Looks good at pour. Glows orange in the glass, a touch hazy, medium khaki head. Restrained hop nose is piney. Flavors are weird. Strong hop resins, grass and pine, acrid sickly sweet grainy malts, burning alcohol finish. I guess the rye is the source of the strong graininess, but I don’t understand the weird sweet-heavy palate and I guess I’m not a fan of the spicy resiny Zythos hop.

10 ounce sample on tap at Bangers in Austin. Aroma has some spicy, peppery rye hints. Some grapefruit citrus is also present. Transparent amber body with a medium yellow head. Starts with some sweet, caramel almost fruity maltiness. A little rye spiciness in the middle. Finishes with a floral hoppy bitterness that is mild. Low carbonation.

Aromas of peppery spice, juicy tropical fruit, citrusy. Hazy red-orange with a fairly lasting white head. Dry, spicy, freshly hoppy. Medium bodied, somewhat sticky.

Rye and tart cherry, creamy mouthfeel. I find some LM beers to be sweet, but this is pretty moderate. Dry finish, some bitterness, some rustic malts.

Tap at bangers in Austin with commonmac. Copper with frothy white head. 14oz pour. Hop forward aroma. Citrus peel, some darker flavor are there but more subtle than expected. Mostly hop and bitter citrus. Some off sourness and a tiny bit of spice. Lots of grain malt which could be better. Finish is quick and dry. Short of a beast but good effort.

(bottle - 12 oz) Hazy orange pour with a fluffy white head. Bitter and dry hop aroma with a light citrus undertone. Rye really dries it out. Flavor is bitter and dry at the start with some light citrus and pine resin coming up at the middle. Dry and lingering bitter finish.

Rich slightly hazy copper and orange tinted body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of rye, resinous and piney hops, earth, malt and a bit of nice fruity sugars. Medium to slightly Full-bodied; Strong rye flavour that shows very well and isn’t too assertive, but also having a proper balance of hops and sugars, all showing strong and not overpowering any other flavour. Aftertaste shows more of an earthy and malty bite with the rye and grain more noticeable along with a very mild alcohol warmth throughout. Overall, a surprisingly nice and very well-balanced IPA with a rye note and a mildishly double ipa quality, but not full out. Definitely worth sampling if you can find this! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Crystal City Wine Shop (12th Street Location) on 19-December-2014 for US$3,79 sampled at home in Washington on 24-February-2015.
