Jet black, tiny head. Rich roasty aroma. Matched in the taste, a touch of ginger too. Very English. Very dry. Very pleasant.

Bottled. Dark ruby red colour, mediumsized brown head, lacing. Aroma is roasted malts with some sweetish hints, most likely from coffee. The flavour is dominated by roasted malts and strong smoke. Some hops, coffee is also noteable. Aftertaste and finish are quite lame with the rest of the beer, but very nice. Thanks omhper.

Bottled. Dark brown. Nice, inviting coffee aroma with notes of cocoa and burnt malt. Dry roasted flavour of coffee, licorice and dark bread with subtle sweetness from vanilla and cocoa. Solid body. Long roasted aftertaste with notes of chocolatesauce and vanilla. Nice stout. Thanks Per.

[Bottled, thanks rauchbier!] Transparently black with rich, firm head. Concentrated aroma of roasty malt. Dry with soft but firm mouthfeel. Creaamy with notes of coffee. Licorice-like bitterness finishes it off. Subtle, yet flavourful. Very clean, yet interesting.

BeerLimey (2154) - California, USA - OCT 26, 2004
Bottle: Opaque black appearance, dense foamy brown head. Licorice and cocoa aroma, milky coffee, burnt alcohol/fruit. Burnt toast, coffee malt flavor, subdued fruitiness, dry with some woody tones. Strong bitter roast in the finish, aftertaste is mildly sweet chocolate milkshake. Thanks to rauchbier for this one.

Spiesy (2338) - Sydney, Greater London, AUSTRALIA - OCT 19, 2004
Bottled. Deep rich engine oil black with a fine, stained brown head. Rich complex, toasted malt aroma. Ashy, burnt flavour. Sweet richness, gives way to intense, dryer, toasted malt flavours. I tried this fresh and bottled, side by side at the brewery, and the bottled was far more complex, refined and subtle. A fantastic beer for any stoutie.

Bottle conditioned, 750ml corked bottle. Jet black, thick, lasting coffee coloured head and gentle condition. Big spicy liquorice aroma, with background notes of coffee and roast barley. A liquorice sweetness in the mouth is kept in check by a gentle roastiness that contributes some dryness. It still has a degree of spicy fruitiness but less obvious than in the nose. Finish is short and coffee sweet with some roast barley dryness and a lingering liquorice note.
