rauchbier (3394) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - OCT 1, 2004
Bottle conditioned, 750ml corked bottle. Jet black, thick, lasting coffee coloured head and gentle condition. Big spicy liquorice aroma, with background notes of coffee and roast barley. A liquorice sweetness in the mouth is kept in check by a gentle roastiness that contributes some dryness. It still has a degree of spicy fruitiness but less obvious than in the nose. Finish is short and coffee sweet with some roast barley dryness and a lingering liquorice note.

Bottled. Dark brown. Nice, inviting coffee aroma with notes of cocoa and burnt malt. Dry roasted flavour of coffee, licorice and dark bread with subtle sweetness from vanilla and cocoa. Solid body. Long roasted aftertaste with notes of chocolatesauce and vanilla. Nice stout. Thanks Per.

Scopey (3239) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUL 2, 2012
Bottle at Leighton’s Euro Semi-Final tasting, thanks to jackl. It pours almost black, with a medium tan head. The nose is roasted malt, charcoal, coffee, salted caramel, toast and toasted coconut. The taste is tangy dark fruit, charcoal, blackcurrant, cherry, raisin, roasted malt, cola and balsamic vinegar. Medium body, moderate carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. To me this doesn’t taste like a classic milk stout, but it’s a decent beer nonetheless.

Benjii (3049) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - JAN 27, 2012
In bottle. Pours a dark brown colour with a fair, light tan head. Aroma of chocolate, treacle, coffee and a little sweet and vegetal. An odd lactic flavour with cabbage, grassy hops, alcohol and yeast. Moderate carbonation and an oily mouth-feel. Strangely alluring with lingering alcohol and yeast.

Bottle at the Semi-Final Tasting. Deep brown color with a small head. The nose is sweet caramel and powdered sugar, cola sweetness. The taste is very fruity - blackberry, cranberry. A bit tangy indeed. Lightly lactic, with a big runny toffee malt base. Medium body, soft carbonation. Perhaps this has a mild infection? Overall, I don’t seem to be a massive fan of the style. This was OK.
