collieman (192), montreal, Quebec, Canada Nov 11, 2005 Updated: Nov 20, 2005 I think this was my first "California Common" , so I’m not shure how true to the style it is, but it is very good. pours a golden amber, just a touch more on the golden side, with the slightest touch of clouding. Thin white whispy head that stays till the bottom, leaving tight laceings all the way down. Aroma is fruity, with a bitter finish. Palat is thin and silky with a slight viscous touch. Taste caught me off guard, a new lager style for me and all. I didn’t know what to expect. I was smashed in the mouth with a strong hit of bitter american hops, grapefruit, and acid dancing with a very mild malty presence. Undertones of overripe treefruit and sweet herbs make a tiny aperance in the micro second before being hit with the bitter aftertaste that is first strong and grapefruit like, finished with a long lasting bitter vapour clinging to the molars and roof of the mouth. Alll this with a background dryness that permiates at every level. I like it. I like it alot. Like a lager for apa/ipa lovers. Cheers.
Rastacouere (5418), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Dec 11, 2005 Copper pour covered by a small white head, mostly diminishing. Appealing herbal, citrusy americanized hops offer an evolutive hop fragrance, quite an hoppy example for that matter. Smooth light body offering cohesive carbonation. Fruity palate as it warms, ranging from straightforward citrus, leafy hops to softening maltiness in limited amounts. Good stuff and indeed more of an IPA. beanmedic (323), Hamilton, Ontario, Canada Nov 15, 2005 slight acidic fruity flavour. off-amber/red colour. pleasantly hoppy. always nice to see an interesting style pop up once in a while. CapFlu (3353), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Nov 13, 2005 (Draught) Sampled at Le Cheval Blanc brewpub on November 12, 2005. Price $5. I don’t think this is a California Common - though I really do not know what style of beer this is? It pours a deep reddish-amber body with a thin, lasting. white head. The nose if full-on West Coast hops. The texture is oily like an ale and the flavour is that of a fortified IPA. Linguring hop bitterness rounds out the finish. All and all an enjoyable beer - but a California Common? When I think of that style, I automatically think Anchor Steam which is much lighter in colour and texture and flavour. I’ll let the local masters decide what this is...
