j12601 (1151), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Apr 11, 2009 On a nitro tap at La Cheval Blanc. Pours a deep black with a medium tan head. Deep roast aromas and a touch of chocolate. Thin (due to the nitro) and smooth. This might be better without the nitro. Nice roast flavors. Ends with a long roasty bitterness. At 4.5% this would make a decent session stout (if one could tolerate the bedlam that is La Cheval Blanc’s bar scene… I couldn’t), though the bitterness may be a bit heavy handed for that. Tried all 8 of their beers on tap when I went, and this was the clear winner, by quite a bit. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jan 9, 2009 In short: A commercial black cake in a pint.
How: Tap at brewpub.
The look: Black body topped by a medium persistent tan head
In long: Timid slightly roasted nose. Fluffy/foamy body. Taste of roasted dark malts, black chocolate, some lactic notes, light coffe hints. More precisely this beer really tastes like a generic black cake. Everything from the taste, mouthfeel and finish reminded me of a *DANY* Dunkin Heinz black cake. Nothing special about it but this is a reliable beer and a regular of the Cheval Blanc lineup and as such this beer has become my late-night fallback choice. This beer and my ex-girlfriend phone number. rodenbach99 (678), Longueuil, Quebec, Canada Sep 18, 2008 fût, classique du cheval blanc, stout de belle couleur noire, mousse brune-café au lait, nez de torréfaction, bouche soyeuse, torréfaction, très agéable. robinvboyer (1419), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada May 31, 2008 I didnt know this was an oatmeal stout when i had it at the brewpub, but on my 1st drink, i thought o myself, wow, this reminds me of an oatmeal stout, im really getting the oats. I was bang on, great roastiness, and a creamy smooth body, great stout. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 24, 2007 Above-average beer (though only average stout) enjoyed on-tap at the brewpub.Cold coffee that has been roasted but is creamy, definately affected by the nitro-tap treatment. Astringent bitter yet still well malted. Coffee aroma. Grainy and creamy mouthfeel. Surprising 33 IBU and under 5% abv.
mabel (2530), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 20, 2007 [523-20070811] Tap @ Cheval Blanc (Montréal, QC). Coffee roasted malt aroma with some nice hints of nut. Black body with a quick foamy light tan head. Flavour holds roast bitter coffee malt with a nutty background and a sweet finish. Medium-full body. Not too heavy, the balance of bitterness and coffee and nuts is interesting. ChazyRPh (571), Chazy, New York, USA Jan 30, 2007 Nitro pour - Opaque black with creamy beige head. Roasty malt aroma, burnt malt also. Creosote. Roasted/burnt malt flavors balanced with some hop presence. Mouthfeel a little thin, a little too acidic - Not bad. csbosox (1076), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Jan 17, 2007 On tap at LCB in Oct ’05. 5oz sample. Looks black, at the bar, with a frothy, khaki head. The head sticks around and around like a nitro pour, but I am not sure it was. Coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and roasted malt aroma. The external cig smoke is a bit overwhelming. The taste is sweet, initially with roasty, chocolate, and coffee flavors, in fact, a lot of coffee. There is some bitterness that gives it espresso notes. The finish is moderately bitter. Full body.
