My Bottom Line:
Fruity, earthy and roasty, this idiosyncratic Imperial Stout provides drinkable nourishment, spiced up with plentiful hops of the leafy and resinous kind.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam sits atop the reddish dark brown.
-This is not your typical Imperial Stout’s grain bill. There are not nearly enough dark chocolate flavors, for example.
-The "green" touch endemic to Frontenac is felt in the second half of each sip, enduring alongside the bittering hops.
-In case you’re still not quite sure what to expect from this, I’d say this is like a blend made of 1/4 American-style Brown Ale and 3/4 Imperial Stout.
Growler.

Deep black pour with a tight brown head. The nose is roasty and a little bit salty with a lot of pronounced hop aroma. A little bit of heavy licorice and a bit of soft chewy molasses as well. A bit of peppery character as well - a fairly assertive bitterness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

on tap at bateau de nuit, qc. Very dark brown almost black with a long lasting dark beige head. Lacing. Dark roasted malts. Light smoke. Figs. Big resinous hops. Booze. Meds. Taste has also layered vanilla in big coffee notes. Maple. Some sweetness. Never cloying. Very soft carbonation. Full bodied. Medium long bitter coffee finish. Tingling alcohol. A nice IS.

On tap @ the brewpub. Listed as 9.1%. Opaque, nearly black, dark brown head. Hard roast dominates the aroma and palate, some sweet chocolate manages to peek out before a blast of hops finishes things off. An assertive and intensely roasty imperial stout.

Draft. Pours a black body with a fully tan head and good retention. Dark and roast y body with coffee grinds. Coffee is very bitter to the point to feels burnt. A light caramel sweetness is lost in the oily roasted body. An overly roasted imperial stout.

Drank on tap (12 oz) at Vices et Versa (Montreal) by the name Le Naufrageur Stout Impériale, on October 3, 2010. Black, small tan head. Toasty malt aroma, notes of cocoa. Taste of toasted malt, slightly tart fruit notes, dry and bitter aftertaste. Simplistic but good!

Cruchon 1.82L.

In short: A very hoppy (herbal, resinous) bitter strong dark ale of some kind. Very good if you don’t expect a “normal” imperial stout
How: Growler. Consumed fresh, tasting session with Montreal crew
The look: Clear mahogany body topped by a off-white ring of foam
In long: Nose of herbal hops and roasted wood. Body is a bit thin for a so-called 8.5% imperial stout with a sensation of watered down grainy burnt malts with a flavour of burnt toasts, some freshly grounded black pepper, earthy notes. Here it is the hops that dominate. Strong and sharp herbal and resinous bitterness. As a true imperial stout it probably misses the mark but as some kind of hoppy strong dark ale with an original bitterness this is quite enjoyable. I’m glad that Carleton-sur-Mer Raccoon made its way to Montreal’s stores without being ran over by a truck.
